Former Liberian President George Manneh Weah has arrived at the Monrovia City Court, where he joining hundreds of supporters to show solidarity with opposition lawmakers charged in connection with the December 2023 “arson attack” on the Capitol Building.
Weah’s presence follows a call made on Sunday, June 8, by several opposition leaders, including Alexander B. Cummings, political leader of the Alternative National Congress (ANC), and Dee-Maxwell Saah Kemayah, political leader of the Movement for Economic Empowerment (MOVEE), urging supporters to gather peacefully at the courthouse in a show of support for the accused.
Dressed in a blue suit, white shirt, and red tie, Weah arrived at the courthouse in a black SUV, accompanied by a contingent of personal security. He did not speak to reporters and only briefly acknowledged a handful of supporters who had gathered outside the courthouse gates to welcome him.
The lawmakers, who are facing trial today, include Speaker J. Fonati Koffa (District #2, Grand Kru County), Abu B. Kamara (District #15, Montserrado County), Dixon Seboe (District #16, Montserrado County), Jacob Debee (District #3, Grand Gedeh County), and Priscilla Cooper (District #5, Montserrado County).
They have been formally charged by the Liberia National Police (LNP) with arson, criminal facilitation, and criminal conspiracy in relation to the fire that gutted the Joint Chambers of the Capitol Building, the official seat of the National Legislature, on December 18, 2023.
Authorities from both the LNP and the Liberia National Fire Service (LNFS) concluded that the fire was a deliberate act of arson, prompting a months-long investigation that culminated in charges against the five lawmakers.
Four of the accused—Koffa, Kamara, Seboe, and Debee—were remanded to the Monrovia Central Prison over the weekend, where they spent two nights. Representative Priscilla Cooper, a member of the ruling Unity Party, was released into the custody of her legal counsel on medical grounds.
The lawmakers are expected to appear in court today.
