Africa-Press – Liberia. Nineteen female inmates and four correction officers at the Monrovia Central Prison have earned CAF D License coaching certificates after completing an eight-day training program organized by the Liberia Football Association (LFA) in partnership with the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The milestone marks the first time a CAF-certified coaching course has been delivered inside Liberia’s correctional system, offering participants a unique pathway toward rehabilitation and reintegration through football.
The training, which ran for eight days, covered foundational coaching skills, team management, and youth development principles. It was led by experienced instructors Selam Kedebe and Robert Lartey.
At the closing ceremony, LFA Third Vice President and CAF Women’s Football Committee member, Mrs. Jodie M. Reid-Seton, praised the participants for their commitment. “Football transcends the pitch. It empowers, unites, and creates hope,” she said, encouraging the women to apply their new skills beyond the prison walls.
LFA Second Vice President Saye-Taayor Adolphus Dolo lauded the program as a tool for empowerment and announced plans to expand the initiative to other correctional facilities across the country.
Human rights advocate Adama K. Dempster also spoke at the ceremony, urging the graduates to view themselves as agents of change. “Prison should not be an end, but a new beginning,” he said.
The CAF D License is a grassroots-level coaching qualification that serves as an entry point into professional coaching. Its inclusion in the prison setting is part of a broader effort to integrate sports into rehabilitation programs and reduce recidivism.
Participants expressed gratitude to the LFA and CAF for the opportunity, holding up their certificates with pride and renewed optimism for life after incarceration.
