Africa-Press – Liberia. Away from the outcome of the ongoing investigation of the Diplomatic Passport scam at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a former Senatorial candidate for Montserrado County, Sheikh Al Moustapha Kouyateh has called on President George Manneh Weah to retrieve all Diplomatic Passports in circulation.
According to Kouyateh, this will ensure that these passports don’t continue to land in the hands of unscrupulous individuals and on some occasions criminals.
Speaking at a news conference in Monrovia on Sunday, May 22, 2022, he pointed out that the issue of the holders of our Diplomatic passports continues to undermine the good image of dear the country and as such, there is a need for steps to be taken.
“It started with former Director of Passports, Mr. Andrew Wonplo, and what was shameful was that Mr. Wonplo was prosecuted and acquitted by the Justice system of the Weah-led government on grounds that there was not sufficient evidence to convict him. Let me submit appreciations on behalf of Liberians to the US who subsequently designated Mr. Wonplo, which I believe led President Weah to send him on exile to avoid mention of names of top government officials, including himself,” the former Senatorial candidate asserted.
He stated that the country’s diplomatic image continues to suffer setbacks because of the irresponsible and ‘misleadrship’ of the government.
“I am begging the US government and other friendly countries to scrutinize every official and Diplomatic Passports holder at every entry point. It is so saddened that the once valuable Liberian Diplomatic passports have become a questionable dossier due to fraudulent attributes of the government,” he added.
