FORUM CIV Ends Women Land Rights Conference in Nimba

Africa-Press – Liberia. FORUM CIV Liberia has ended a two-day conference on the 2nd Rural Women Land Rights Conference (RWLRC) in Ganta City, Nimba County with over 250 persons in attendance.

Participants of the Conference have been drawn from the fifteen counties of Liberia, held under the theme: “Sustaining the Momentum to Secure Rural Women Land Rights.”

Forum-CIV is a Swedish based non-governmental organization that is working with Civil Society Organizations and people’s rights institutions across the world.

Moreover, the Swedish-based organization believes that only when people’s rights are being recognized sustainable and long-term development can take place. The organization was established in 1995 and is the largest Civil Society platform in Swedish.

Given the overview and opening of the Conference, the program Manager for FORUM CIV Liberia, Agnes Kormon said the conference falls under the Sustainable ownership program which they have been empowering communities and civil society organizations in Liberia.

Madam Kormon discovered that Forum CIV is working hard to safeguard the implementation of the Land Rights Law to benefit local communities, as well as, strengthening organizational capacity and sharing insights between communities and social movements.

The Forum CIV Liberia Program Manager said their entity aims is to journey with civil society in Liberia to ensure land access and strengthen services relating to land.

Notwithstanding, Madam Kormon said her entity has four thematic focus areas, namely: Democracy and Human Rights, Climate Change and Environment, Gender Equality, and Land Rights.

Also, speaking at the opening ceremony of the conference, the Secretary-General of FORUM CIV, Anna Strenvinkel called on participants of the two days conference to take the conference seriously.

The Forum CIV Liberia SG at the same time called on women who are attending the two days conference to ask all the necessary questions surrounding how they as women can acquire land in their respective communities in Liberia.

For her part, Liberia Representative to ECOWAS Women Peace and Security Network, Miami Kannah lauded the effort of FORUM CIV Liberia for organizing the 2nd Rural Women Land Rights Conference in the Country.

Madam Kannah, who served as guest speaker at the opening ceremony of the RWLRC, described the conference as an eye-opener for women, especially rural women in Liberia.

The Liberia Representative to ECOWAS Women Peace and Security Network told the gathering that for too long women have been marginalized when it comes to acquiring land. She’s at the same time calling on women who are attending the conference to see the conference as an opportunity for them. She further lauded the effort of President George M. Weah for the passage of the Land Rights Act of 2018 in the country.
