Africa-Press – Liberia. Friends of Liberia Food and Water Incorporated, a Liberian-owned rice production company based in Gbatala, has turned over more than 800 bags of locally processed rice to the Ministry of Agriculture, marking a significant boost to the government’s efforts toward achieving food self-sufficiency.
The consignment was processed from paddy rice earlier supplied to the company for milling and packaging.
Speaking at the handover ceremony over the weekend, the company’s Project Manager, Rev. Adolphus Capehart, expressed appreciation to the Ministry for entrusting the firm with what he described as a major production responsibility.
He hailed the successful processing and delivery as “a milestone achievement and a testament to the company’s growing capacity.”
Rev. Capehart noted that the collaboration between the Ministry and Friends of Liberia Food and Water Inc. demonstrates the potential of local industry to contribute meaningfully to national food security. He encouraged Liberians to prioritize agriculture—especially rice farming—echoing President Joseph Boakai’s call for citizens to grow and consume locally produced food.
“Rice is Liberia’s staple, and we must take responsibility for producing what we eat,” he said. “This partnership shows that when we support local initiatives, we strengthen our economy and empower our farmers.”
Receiving the donation on behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture, Monsio Wreh welcomed the initiative as a clear demonstration of the government’s ARREST Agenda, which prioritizes agriculture, rural development, and economic self-reliance.
Wreh noted that the successful processing of such a large quantity of rice signifies “another meaningful step toward national food sufficiency and reduced dependence on imported rice.”
He commended Friends of Liberia Food and Water Inc. for its commitment to supporting government programs and urged other private sector actors to emulate the company’s initiative.
The gesture comes as the government intensifies efforts to revitalize the agriculture sector, promote local production, and reduce Liberia’s heavy reliance on imported food.
