Africa-Press – Liberia. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the Liberian government is confident of winning a bid to lead the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council, as existing continental mechanisms enable Africa to present a common agenda to the United Nations Security Council.
The African Union Peace and Security Council is an organ of the AU responsible for preventing, managing, and resolving conflicts on the continent. Elections for the council will be held next week during the 48th Session of the AU Executive Council, scheduled for February 11 to 12 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Speaking recently in Monrovia, Deputy Minister for International Cooperation and Economic Integration at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Ibrahim Nyei, said Liberia has been actively campaigning with its African counterparts since its candidacy was accepted by the AU. He claims that the government has conducted months of diplomatic engagements and is optimistic about securing what he described as a “very decisive victory” in next week’s election.
“If Liberia is elected, it will complement our objectives at the United Nations Security Council, especially as Africa already has a common agenda at the UN level,” he said.
To illustrate the potential efforts already being made Dr. Nyei further disclosed that the Minister of Foreign Affairs Sara Beysolow Nyanti has been engaged in extensive bilateral diplomacy, soliciting votes and support from other AU member states to ensure Liberia’s election and that the diplomatic efforts so far have been positive and well received by member states, reinforcing the government’s confidence as the election approaches.
Meanwhile, he added that since she took office, she has been working to implement a two-point agenda: first, to rebrand Liberia’s image globally; and second, to reposition Liberia in international affairs.
He explained that this includes ensuring that Liberia gains leadership roles in global diplomacy and in international multilateral organizations, to promote a positive image of the country worldwide. At the President’s mandate, she has been implementing several key initiatives, including Liberia’s bid to lead the AU Peace and Security Council.
