Africa-Press – Liberia. The House of Representatives of Liberia has seized the passage of the recast budget of 2024 due to the Ministry of Finance’s decision to eliminate the ($100,000 USD) allocated for the legislative project under the Liberia Agency for Community Empowerment (LACE).
Sources within the house have revealed that the House of Representatives was scheduled to have a special session today (September 13, 2024) for the House’s committee on ways, means, and finance to present a report on the recast budget.
However, the session has been postponed and to be held on Monday, 16 September 2024 at 11am.
Sources further that the lawmakers have agreed to re-insert the US$11.8m for the 103 lawmakers; 73 Representatives and 30 Senators for their legislative projects.
The decision to remove the funding for the legislative project has sparked earlier controversy among lawmakers, with many expressing their dismay at the Ministry of Finance’s actions. The recast budget was already facing scrutiny and criticism from various quarters, and this latest development has only added fuel to the fire.
It remains to be seen how the House of Representatives will proceed with the recast budget in light of these recent events. Lawmakers are expected to engage in heated debates and discussions during the special session as they seek to find a way forward.
