Koffa Calls for Social Safety Net Fund

Africa-Press – Liberia. Former House Speaker J. Fonita Koffa has written the plenary calling for the creation of a National Social Safety Net fund to provide relief for vulnerable Liberians.

Monrovia, October 24, 2025: Rep. Koffa said his call is in the interest of the struggling citizens across the Republic and calls for the establishment of a USD 25 million Social Safety Net Fund dedicated to helping vulnerable Liberians meet urgent human needs, specifically school fees and rent payments.

“Despite mixed economic numbers, it is clear that the Liberian family is in crisis. Many families have become migratory, moving from one place to another when rent becomes due,” he said.

He said heads of household no longer go home after Work; they linger about until midnight because the landlord sits outside the home, and drivers who drive their children to school have their own children sitting at home, forbidding them to come outside because of the shame associated with the inability to pay school fees.

Koffa added that, amid significant legislative and executive benefits, large and luxurious foreign travel, the purchase of new and more expensive vehicles, and wasteful government spending. At the same time, they seek to rescue Liberia, the solutions must be equitable, with no one group singled out to pay a higher price.

He therefore called on the plenary to say that his communication be read in plenary and forwarded to the appropriate committees for review and subsequent action upon the submission of the 2026 National Budget.

Meanwhile plenary has instructed its joint committee on Education, Ways and Means, and Youth and Sports to review a communication seeking the establishment of a USD 25 million National Social Safety Net Fund.
