LAA, LSEZ Launch Special Economic Zones to Transform Airport Lands into Business and Industrial Hubs

Africa-Press – Liberia. The Liberia Airport Authority (LAA) and the Liberia Special Economic Zones (LSEZ) Authority have signed a Memorandum of Cooperation to establish the country’s first Airport Special Economic Zone (ASEZ) at Roberts International Airport, marking a key step in efforts to attract investment and spur economic development.

The agreement was formalized on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at a signing ceremony held at the airport in Margibi County, bringing together top executives and government officials.

The ASEZ initiative aims to transform portions of airport land into business and industrial hubs, promoting light manufacturing, logistics, commercial infrastructure, and investment-friendly operations.

The goal is to stimulate job creation, attract foreign direct investment, and contribute to broader national growth.

“This agreement lays the foundation for a vibrant airport city,” said Jero Mends-Cole, Managing Director of the LAA. “Designating airport land as a Special Economic Zone will help diversify our economy and enhance Liberia’s connectivity to regional and global markets.”

Prince A. Wreh, Executive Chairman of the LSEZ Authority, highlighted Liberia’s geographic advantage as a West African gateway and emphasized the synergy between infrastructure upgrades and trade development.

“This initiative capitalizes on our strategic location and will help build a competitive environment for regional commerce,” he said.

The ASEZ launch aligns with a broader plan by the LAA to modernize Roberts International Airport. Upcoming upgrades include enhanced terminal facilities, improved runways, upgraded safety systems, reliable power, and integration of new airport technologies.

Officials say the twin developments—airport modernization and the ASEZ—are expected to boost investor confidence and generate new employment and entrepreneurial opportunities for Liberians across multiple sectors.
