Liberia: Africa Science Week Honors Dr. Nyan for Contributions to Science

Africa-Press – Liberia. Africa’s prominent award-winning scientist and inventor from Liberia, Dr. Dougbeh Christopher Nyan, M.D., has been honored by Africa Science Week 2023 for his immense contribution to the promotion and advancement of science and technology in Liberia, Africa, and the world.

The African Science Week is a global initiative of the Next Einstein Forum (NEF) and the African Institute of Mathematics and Science (AIMS) which previously recognized Dr. Nyan’s groundbreaking scientific work and inventions at the NEF event held in 2018 in Kigali, Rwanda.

“Congratulations on being selected as an honoree by the Africa Science Week 2023. This prestigious recognition is a testament to your [Dr. Nyan’s] exceptional contributions and unwavering dedication to the field of science in Liberia, Africa, and the world at large,” stated the letter of nomination by Archie Forpoh, the Next Einstein Forum Ambassador for the 2022-24 period.

Nyan is globally acclaimed for inventing the rapid multiplex isothermal diagnostic test for infectious diseases – (named, the Nyan-Test). The test simultaneously detects and distinguishes 3 to 7 infectious pathogens under an hour. It is portable, sensitive, accurate, affordable and applicable in clinical and point-of-care settings. This disruptive innovation enables diagnosis in record time and has been granted three United States Patents.

In the last two decades, Nyan has dedicated his time in mentoring young people in the sciences as a driving force for Liberia’s and Africa’s scientific renaissance. He has truly fostered science education in Africa and the world, particularly focusing on Liberia in recent years.

Nyan continues to give back to society in an impactful way. He has performed a year of unpaid volunteer national service – lecturing, teaching, and organizing seminar-workshops in public health, natural science, laboratory science, and medicine at various academic and medical institutions in Liberia and other African countries.

This year’s Africa Science Week – 2023 was simultaneously held in more than 10 African countries including Liberia under the theme “Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges,” and which emphasized the need to address the gender gap in STEM fields and promote diversity and inclusivity in science and Technology.
