Liberia: Clergymen Endorse ‘Cummings-Brumskine’ Ticket for President

CLAUDIUS T. GREENE JR.

Africa-Press – Liberia. A group of clergymen, known as the “Founding Pastors of Liberty Party,” have officially endorsed Cllr. Charlyne Brumskine and Alexander Cummings as their choice for the presidential and vice-presidential ticket in the upcoming Liberian election.

Led by Bishop Dr. Ola Jallah, the group claimed that they consist of founding members of the Liberty Party who strongly supported the late Cllr. Charles Walker Brumskine, the party’s founder.

Jallah noted that the clergymen were confident in Brumskine’s ability to fill her father’s shoes and continue his legacy; as such, they pledged their support to the Cummings-Brumskine ticket.

“Cllr. Brumskine saw us as precious to him. He made us a family and the Liberty Party was founded by Ministers of the Gospel,” Jallah noted. “It was pastors that passed the resolution to form the Liberty Party. And after 14 days of fasting and praying, the name was chosen.”

“We are here because I believe in the work of Cllr. Brumskine has not been completed. And Cllr. Charlyne Brumskine is Cllr. Charles Brumskine. We will give our support to the Collaborating Political Parties because we have made our decision to stand by her,” said Jallah said on behalf of the group.

While accepting the endorsement, younger Brumskine noted that a “Cummings-Brumskine” government would strive to represent and fight for all Liberians, irrespective of their tribal, gender, or religious backgrounds.

She added that a potential victory for the Cummings-led ticket was possible owing to the perceived lackluster performance of the Weah-Taylor administration, particularly in areas such as investment, healthcare, and education.

“We will fight for you, nobody will fight for you than us. We will advocate for you,” Brumskine said.” “We will fight for Liberia. I am so humbled and grateful, and I am so blessed that you took the time to invite us here to pledge your support.”

“God first, we will not disappoint you. We will do everything to live up to your expectation if we are elected,” Brumskine added.

The Liberty Party, which was founded by Brumskine, was once embroiled in acrimonious internal strife, resulting in a split between supporters of Musa Bility, the party’s chairman, and Senator Nyonblee Karngar Lawrence, the former political leader.

However, since Brumskine’s selection as Cummings’ running mate on the Collaborating Political Parties ticket, she has garnered significant support from members of the party who previously supported Lawrence and those who remained neutral.

Following the split, Lawrence and her supporters switched their allegiance to the Unity Party’s standard bearer, Joseph Boakai. Brumskine was chosen by Cummings to be his running mate, prompting her to abandon her previous pursuit of a legislative seat in Grand Bassa County.

Meanwhile, Brumskine has described her selection as a divine intervention similar to the biblical story of David being anointed as King of Israel. She acknowledged the challenging task of filling her father’s void but professed her determination to rise to the occasion with the help of God and the Liberty Party.
