Africa-Press – Liberia. The Liberia Council of Churches has issued a strong condemnation following the violent incident that took place on Friday, September 29, 2023, in Foyah, Lofa County, which resulted in the tragic loss of three lives.
In a press statement released by the Council, they expressed their utmost disapproval of the violence and called upon all citizens of Foyah, Lofa County, to remain calm while state security forces work to regain control of the situation.
The Council of Churches, in its statement, urgently called on the Joint Security to initiate a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the incident to ensure that those responsible for the brutal acts are brought to justice.
Furthermore, the Council urged the Unity Party and Coalition of Democratic Change, who are believed to be at the center of the fracas, to cooperate fully with the Joint Security in the investigation. This appeal for cooperation is seen as a crucial step toward resolving the matter and maintaining peace in the region.
The Liberia Council of Churches also addressed Liberia’s youth, emphasizing the importance of their responsibilities as future leaders and the inheritors of the nation. They strongly discouraged the involvement of young people in acts of violence orchestrated by politicians. The Council described such acts as “ungodly, inhumane, and unpatriotic” and reminded the youth that Liberia has endured significant hardships in the past.
As Liberia prepares for the upcoming elections scheduled for October 10th, 2023, the Council of Churches reiterated its earlier call for heightened state security measures to prevent and address any incidents that could disrupt the electoral process. Their concern is that such disruptions could jeopardize the integrity of the elections.
In a related development, the Liberia Council of Churches welcomed the recent United States State Department’s Visa restrictions imposed on Liberians involved in promoting violence and manipulating the electoral process. This measure is seen as a significant step toward ensuring a free and fair election.
In conclusion, the President of the Liberia Council of Churches, Rev. Dr. Samuel B. Reeves, Jr., urged all Liberians to come together in unity and prayer for the peace and prosperity of the nation. He closed by saying, “May God bless us all and protect this Sweet Land of Liberty.”
The Liberia Council of Churches includes prominent religious leaders, such as Rev. Dr. Samuel B. Reeves, Jr., Bishop Samuel J. Quire, Jr., Moderator Sanjee A. Stepter, Rev. Christopher W. Toe, and Emmanuel Howe, among others, who are committed to promoting peace, justice, and unity in Liberia.
