Africa-Press – Liberia. Liberians will this Saturday, January 7, 2023 gather in their numbers at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville City to cheer their counties of origin in continuation of the National County Sports Meet.

The quarter-final stage of the competition on Saturday will witness a spectacular display in both Kickball and football from the eight quarter finalists.

In the football show pieces high flying group A winner, Rivercess County will line up against defending champion Nimba County at 2 PM on Saturday, January 7, 2023.

Nimba made it to the last eight on the last day of the preliminary round following a convincing victory over River Gee county while it was the opposite for Rivercess who top her group before the last day.

In the second match of the day it will be a tough battle between two former champions who are determined to get their hands on the trophy once more when Lofa County interface with Grand Bassa county at 4PM in the last quarterfinal match of the day at SKD sports complex.

While in the kickball category defending champion Lofa County will have a tricky task when they meet Grand Bassa county who are powerhouse in County meet kickball, but before their clash Rivercess County will take on Nimba county for a place in the semi-final.

On Sunday January 8 the Gibi boys of Margibi County will play her neighbors Montserrado County at 2PM after the battle the Grebo Boys of Maryland County will knock boots with Bong County at 4PM .

In the kickball category: the girls from Central Liberia Bong County will go all out against the city girls of Montserrado, while in the second match Grand Kru will lock horns with Margibi county for the right to play in the semi-final.

Meanwhile the Basketball Quarterfinals matches will take place on Tuesday January 10 2023 with RiverCess vs Nimba 1pm and Lofa County vs Grand Gedeh at 2pm

In the third match, Sinoe county and Grand Kru will come face to face at 3pm and the last match will bring Montserrado and Bong neck to neck at 4pm.

Meanwhile, the winner from Rivercess and Nimba game will face the winner from Sinoe and Grand Kru match In the semi-final.

The second Semi-final match will come on between the winner of Lofa and Grand Gedeh will meet Bong and Montserrado County game.

The County meet is Liberia’s biggest sporting event and the 2022/2023 kick off Saturday, December 17, in the Port city of Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, and continue at the four host venues namely Buchanan Grand Bassa, Gbarnga Bong County, Lofa, and Maryland Counties.

The preliminaries round ended on December 24 across the host venues with eight teams reaching the quarterfinal.

The annual sports festival is aimed at uniting the people of Liberia and is played among the 15 sub-division of the country.

Its objective is to scout talents for the various national teams of Liberia and such objectives are key to sports development and peace promotion.

This year’s edition has a new prime sponsor in ArcelorMittal who replaced a long-time sponsor Orange Liberia GSM.

On Monday, November 14, 2022, ArcelorMittal officially took over as the headline sponsor of the National County Sports Meet bicentennial edition after a U.S. $275,000 agreement was signed between the Ministry of Youth and Sports and ArcelorMittal.

At the unveiling ceremony Youth and Sports Minister, D. Zeogar Wilson, disclosed that the out of the US$275,000, US$25,000 will be divided between Nimba, Bong and Grand Bassa Counties, where ArcelorMittal Liberia operates.

On December 8, 2022 Liberia International Ship and Corporate Registry (LISCR) presented a huge consignment of customized equipment and supplies to the Ministry of Youth and Sports for the upcoming National County Sports Meet.

The materials and equipment to be used for the annual sports festival cost US$ 10,000.00.

The items include four Big Sized Trophies (Football, Kickball, and Basketball), 20 Individual trophies and awards, 40 customized medals (150 gold, 150 silver, 150 bronze), and 3000 customized ribbons for accreditation for all participating counties.

The County Meet was first organized in 1956 to unify the country, and this year’s edition is in “Commemorating 200 Years as a nation.
