Africa-Press – Liberia. The main campus of Cuttington University (CU) in Suakoko, Bong County, is expected to come alive on Saturday, June 24, as the school hosts its 61st commencement conversation, which as per every indication, promises to me a monumental one.

CU administration has disclosed that about five hundred and seventy-four (574) students from its three campuses in Bong, Margibi and Montserrado Counties—walking out with master and bachelor’s degrees as well as advanced diplomas.

While providing a statistical analysis or breakdown of the graduates, the vice president for Institutional Advancement at the university, Advertus Wright, noted that 22 students will be graduating from the University Junior College in Kakata, Margibi County, while 216 from the undergraduate Program in Suakoko, Bong County, and 300 from the School of Graduate and Professional Studies in Monrovia.

Additionally, he said 36 students will be obtaining Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDF) and Post Graduate Diploma in Monitoring and Evaluation (PGDME).

Wright disclosed that those students who will be conferred or awarded degrees by Cuttington University in distinct academic disciplines are students who have been academically examined and have satisfactorily gone through the ranks and files of the University’s academic curricular activities in line with the best international academic standards and practices.

He further noted that as part of Cuttington University’s mission to produce more qualified and knowledgeable professionals in different specialized studies, the institution remains committed to providing quality educational services and fostering a 21st Global Century of education in the Country.

“This year’s commencement is associated with major events that have beautified the entire commencement convocation. The activities started with the Herbert and Marion Donovan College of Allied Health Sciences Tea Party followed by the President’s Traditional Tea Party, while the Baccalaureate Service was held on the University’s main Campus on June 18, 2023,” Wright revealed.

This year’s Commencement Convocation is under the watchful eyes of H.E Dr. Romelle A. Horton, President of Cuttington University.

The Mission Director of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Liberia mission office, Jim Wright, has been selected to serve as speaker for the university’s 61st Commencement Convocation.

Wright, who has been a Foreign Service Officer for 20 years and has over 30 years of experience managing international development and relief programs, was sworn in as Liberia Mission Director on July 26, 2021.

He leads a team of 104 people promoting private sector-led economic growth through three key objectives: market-driven inclusive economic growth supporting increased job creation, effective and inclusive governance catalyzed through reforms and greater accountability, and foundations for growth strengthened through a healthy, productive, and educated population.

He was most recently the Mission Director for USAID/Timor-Leste, where he led the Mission in establishing a new five-year partnership with the host country government to strengthen good governance.

Prior to that, Wright served as Director of the USAID Middle East Bureau’s Office of Technical Support, where he oversaw a team of sectoral specialists providing advice and support to field operating units, in the areas of democracy and governance, countering violent extremism, youth empowerment, private-sector led economic growth, education, health, water and sanitation.

Previous overseas assignments with USAID were as Deputy Mission Director in the Dominican Republic, Senior Development Officer for Western Afghanistan, Deputy Director of USAID’s Office of Middle East Programs in Cairo, as well as program office positions in Mali, Nigeria, and Ghana. He also worked as a personal services contractor in the Office of Food for Peace, Emergency Response Division, covering West Africa and Latin America. He served on Disaster Assistance Response Teams for Mozambique and Kosovo.

Meanwhile, this remarkable commencement convocation is expected to be graced by the chairman and members of the Board of Trustees of Cuttington University, faculty and staff of the University, high-profile Government officials of the Republic of Liberia, officials and members of the Bong County Legislative Caucus, parents and guardians, families and friends of the graduates.

Cuttington University is a private university in Suakoko, Liberia. Founded in 1889 as Cuttington College by the Episcopal Church of the United States (ECUSA), it is the oldest private, coeducational, undergraduate, and degree-granting institution in sub-Saharan Africa. It has immensely contributed to the human capital development of the country and has produced notable alumni who have served and continue to serve the country and humanity for years.
