Africa-Press – Liberia. Although Liberia Amputees missed out on clinching their record fourth Nations Cup title, there is still something worth celebrating as they finished as Runners-up in the 2021 Cup of African Nations for Amputee Football (CANAF).
The Amputee Lone Star suffered a 3-2 defeat to Ghana in the grand final on Saturday in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Striker Matthew Joe put Liberia in front 14 minutes on the clock, but the Ghanaians leveled things up to send the match to extra-time.
The Ghanaians took the lead for the first time in the extra time to make it 2-1, but striker Joe made it 2-2, recording his 9th goal in five matches at this years’ tournament.
Saturday’s final which was the third between the two teams, finally went the Ghanaians way after they scored a late goal to clinch the title for the second time since they last won the maiden edition by defeating Liberia 4-3 in Sierra Leone 2007. Liberia remain the record-holders (3 titles) and will participate in the 2022 Amputee World Cup in Turkey as one of Africa’s four representatives.
