Africa-Press – Liberia. In a recent address, Labour Minister Cllr Charles H. Gibson emphasized Liberia’s strong dedication to advancing gender equality in all aspects of the country’s development and administration.
He cited the historic election of Liberia’s first female president, who served for 12 years, as well as the subsequent election of another female Vice President, who is set to serve for another 12 years, as inspiring examples for the world to follow. Minister Gibson called on the global community to mirror Liberia’s achievements in gender equality and extend greater opportunities to women.
Minister Gibson expressed his belief that every gender in Liberia has the potential to demonstrate their capabilities to the international community, showcasing their progress and competence acquired over the years. This commitment to gender equality reinforces Liberia’s progressive stance on inclusivity and empowerment.
Additionally, Minister Gibson highlighted a significant accomplishment in addressing salary disparities at ArcelorMittal Liberia. He stressed the importance of ensuring that employees are rewarded based on their work performance rather than their qualifications or knowledge. The focus should be on the contributions individuals make to the workforce, regardless of their profession.
The Ministry of Labour, in collaboration with the Liberia Human Resources Association, is actively conducting a comprehensive personnel audit of salary structures and job positions at ArcelorMittal Liberia and various other concession companies operating in Liberia. This initiative aims to create a level playing field for both genders, enabling equal employment opportunities throughout the country.
Minister Gibson emphasized that the personnel audit will greatly contribute to shaping policy formulation, ensuring that Liberia continues to lead the way in achieving gender balance. This strategic move reaffirms Liberia’s commitment to equality and inclusivity in the workplace.
Under Minister Gibson’s visionary leadership, the Ministry of Labour is making notable strides in promoting gender equality, serving as a trailblazer for the rest of the world. During the workshop, the head of the Gender and Social Inclusion Unit (GSIU) at the Ministry of Labour, Mrs. Enad Harris-Doe, explained that the objective of the Gender Audit is to comprehensively assess and analyze the policies, organizational processes, and structure of the Ministry of Labour.
The ultimate goal is to identify existing gaps and recommend interventions to strengthen the Ministry’s commitment to enhancing gender mainstreaming at all levels, aligning with current policies. The workshop was facilitated by Mr. James F. Tellewoyan, a consultant from UN Women specializing in Gender Audit.
