Africa-Press – Liberia. The National Reference Laboratory at the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) has confirmed three new cases of Mpox, bringing the total number of active cases in the country to four, but no fatalities have been reported.
The announcement was made during a press conference held Sunday at the NPHIL headquarters in Congo Townz, where NPHIL Director-General, Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan, disclosed that the new cases were detected using the molecular-based quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) method.
“This accounts for the first uptick since Liberia recorded zero cases of Mpox in December 2024 and March 2025, with over 70 recoveries and no deaths,” Dr. Nyan stated.
He further noted that the resurgence comes amid a rise in cases in neighboring West African countries, including Ghana, Togo, and Sierra Leone. And as a result, NPHIL has heightened its surveillance and response efforts, especially along border areas.
“We have increased Liberia’s border surveillance and are collaborating with public health authorities in Sierra Leone to strengthen cross-border monitoring and prevent the spread of Mpox,” Dr. Nyan added.
Also, Dr. Yuah Nemah, Director of the Extended Programme for Immunization and head of the Vaccination Pillar of the Incident Management System (IMS), outlined plans to vaccinate high-risk groups and contacts of infected persons.
Additionally, Dr. Kollie, head of the Case Management Pillar, confirmed the availability of a dedicated Mpox isolation center at the Star Base facility.
Meanwhile, a press release distributed on the day of the conference revealed that public health officials also addressed a recent social media video featuring a Liberian celebrity comedian who appeared to display pox-like symptoms.
The statement further noted that the suspected case was promptly investigated. The individual was tested, isolated for further care, and has been commended by NPHIL for using his platform to raise awareness about the disease.
In closing, the release urged the public to remain vigilant, adhere to health safety measures, and avoid panic as health authorities continue efforts to control the spread of Mpox.
