Africa-Press – Liberia. The Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), National Patriotic Party (NPP), and the Liberia People Democratic Party (LPDP) have agreed and reaffirmed their commitment to work together in the ensuing 2023 Legislative and Presidential elections.
The Coalition’s reaffirmation said the collective support for the re-election of President George M. Weah “is in the supreme cause of the great people of Liberia in whose interest the Pro-poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development is being successfully implemented.”
According to the coalition, the decision is in recognition of the tremendous development gains of the CDC-led government, which remains committed to fulfilling the solemn promises that inspired the existence of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC).
In 2016, the three named political parties formed a coalition headed by Weah then Senator of Montserrado County to win the nation’s highest seat, the presidency.
Weah before then had missed out on the Presidency. He contested in 2005 as the presidential candidate of the Congress for Democratic Change and lost. In 2011, he went as Vice President to Winston Tubman but the CDC lost again to the Unity Party which former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf then led.
“We the following parties, CDC, the NPP, and LPDP have agreed to reaffirm our commitment to the Coalition for Democratic Change 2016 agreement, and henceforth, reaffirm our commitment to work together in the ensuing 2023 Legislative and Presidential elections,” the statement of reaffirmation indicated.
“Realizing the impressive achievements of the Weah-led government and the enabling democratic space it has ascertained, is a watershed moment for our country and an opportunity we have embraced as a patriotic and institutional imperative to support its continuity,” the agreement averred.
The CDC Chairman, Mulbah Morlu, said the decision to reaffirm commitment for the 2023 elections is based on the Weah-led government’s laudable efforts in the provision of employment opportunities for the ordinary citizens, especially “where it has sustained the delivery of essential social services to the people in many key areas, including healthcare, education, and agriculture.”
Morlu said the renewed commitment would see President Weah win the election during the first round, a statement that sparked overwhelming elation among partisans, who responded with battle cry chants.
Meanwhile, Morlu has called on supporters, partisans, and sympathizers of the coalition to take advantage of the National Elections Commission (NEC) announced dates for registration and be registered.
Morlu said it’s the only way to defeat the opposition, stating “the CDC supports the biometric voting process for the 2023 elections announced by the NEC and you must take advantage to be part of the voting to ensure that we have President George M. Weah re-elected 2023.”
