Africa-Press – Liberia. Liberia has intensified its global diplomatic campaign to secure a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

The country has dispatched high-level envoys, including former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, to key countries around the world.

These final engagements come as the West African nation nears the culmination of its year-long international campaigns, with voting scheduled to take place in June during the 79th session of the UN General Assembly at the UN Headquarters in New York City.

Liberia campaign is expected to end on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

Speaking at a press briefing held Thursday, May 22, 2025, at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism, Liberia’s Deputy Minister for Legal Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cllr. Jeddi M. Armah, provided updates on Liberia’s current standing in the campaign.

He says the vote, which will determine Liberia’s role in global peace and security decision making, is expected to take place at the UN headquarters in New York later this year.

He claimed that if the country is successful, it will begin its two-year term as a non-permanent member of the Security Council in January 2026.

Deputy Minister Armah, who was speaking on behalf of the Foreign Affairs Minister, Sara Beysolow Nyanti, on the occasion, highlighted the depth of the country’s campaign efforts.

He says for almost a year now, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has undertaken a highly coordinated diplomatic initiative that has been led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs to gain support for Liberia’s bid.

He revealed that this global campaign has been coordinated by Liberia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Lewis G. Brown.

He says Ambassador Brown has been supporting the Foreign Minister with an advisory team comprising four former foreign ministers, who have been instrumental in engaging international stakeholders and working closely with the President’s Office to deliver messages reinforcing the campaign.

As part of these strategic missions, he says former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf recently visited Sudan to deliver a special message of support, and also former Foreign Minister Dr. Toga Gayewea McIntosh is currently in Guinea, accompanied by Assistant Minister Sorrie Kabbah Jones, engaging with the President of Gabon.

Moreover, he says another former Foreign Minister, Gbehzohngar Findley, is leading missions to Croatia and the Comoros with letters from the Liberian President, and Dr. Abraham Jan is in Brussels attending the African Union Summit, using the platform to build bilateral support for Liberia’s candidacy.

“We have campaigned in a coordinated fashion, and our confidence level is very high. We believe we are going to win this,” Armah said. He added that no other country has formally challenged Liberia’s bid, which further boosts the country’s optimism.

Highlighting Liberia’s historical contributions to peace and diplomacy, he urged all citizens and international partners to support the campaign. “This is not just a win for Liberia it is a win for Africa and for nations that believe in global cooperation and peace,” Kruah concluded.

Meanwhile, he says, Liberia, a founding member of both the OAU and the AU, is seeking to reclaim its space on the world stage, leveraging its legacy and reputation in multilateral diplomacy.

Meanwhile, the election for non-permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is scheduled to take place in June 2025 during the 79th session of the UN General Assembly at the UN Headquarters in New York City.

This election will determine five non-permanent members who will serve two-year terms starting on January 1, 2026.

The seats are allocated as follows, two for the African Group, one for the Asia-Pacific Group, one for the Latin American and Caribbean Group, and one for the Eastern European Group.

As of now, the exact date in June has not been publicly announced.

However, such elections typically occur in early to mid-June. For instance, the previous UNSC election was held on June 6, 2024.

Regarding Liberia’s candidacy, it is noteworthy that Liberia is among the countries vying for one of the two seats allocated to the African Group.

The country has been actively campaigning for this position, with high-level diplomatic engagements and support from regional organizations like ECOWAS.
