Liberia: Rep. Moima Briggs Announces Bid for Deputy Speaker Post

Africa-Press – Liberia. Bong County Electoral District #6 Representative, Moima Briggs Mensah, has announced her candidacy for the position of Deputy Speaker.

In an interview with a local station in Gbarnga, she emphasized her commitment to bridging the existing gender gap in the Liberian Lower House leadership. Throughout its history, the Liberian House of Representatives has never had a female Deputy Speaker. Representative Mensah aims to fill this void and pave the way for more female representation in the House.

Despite the scarcity of female lawmakers in the Lower House, she is determined to persuade her male colleagues to view her as a symbol of unity between genders. Moreover, Representative Mensah wants to showcase that women possess the knowledge of legislative proceedings and have the potential to be exceptional leaders.

The election for Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives is scheduled for January 15, 2024, and its outcomes are expected to shape the direction of the august body for the next six years.

Rep. Briggs-Mensah, who also chairs the Bong County Legislative Caucus, however, promised to bring diligence, commitment, hard work, and exemplary trust to the office of the Deputy Speaker.

Since being elected in October 2017, Representative Mensah has held various legislative positions in Bong County and nationwide. She currently serves as the Chairperson of the Bong Legislative Caucus, the Co-chair of the International Women Caucus, and the co-chair of the Posts and Telecommunications Committee, among other roles.

Additionally, Mensah is a member of the African Parliamentarian Union and the inter-parliamentarian Union. She also serves on committees such as the State Owned Enterprise Committee, Investment and Concession Committee, and the Executive Committee at the Lower House of the Liberian Parliament.

Her extensive experience in different capacities further underscores her qualifications for the position of Deputy Speaker. Mensah has, however, urged her kinsmen and kinswomen in Bong County to engage with their colleagues in a unifying manner, transcending political divisions for the benefit of the county.

She believes that if the Deputy Speakership is awarded to Bong County, it will bring significant advantages. Finally, Madam Mensah humbly asked for the prayers and support of the people as she embarks on this journey. She is so far the only representative who has openly declared her intention for the post.
