Liberia Revenue Authority Dismisses 46 Employees

Africa-Press – Liberia. The Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) has announced plans to dismiss at least 46 employees found guilty of falsifying hospital receipts to illegally obtain medical resources.

Speaking at the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing, Commissioner General James Dorbor Jallah said the dismissals follow a months-long investigation that uncovered widespread misconduct.

“Employees must work fairly for the people. Anyone involved in misconduct will face the full consequences of the LRA law,” Jallah warned.

According to him, the scandal was first uncovered in February 2025, when investigators discovered a cartel fabricating hospital receipts. Following a thorough review by the LRA’s Professional Ethics Department, the accused staff were given multiple opportunities to respond before the decision to terminate their employment was reached.

“As such, effective this month of September 2025, these employees will receive letters of termination and will no longer be with the Liberia Revenue Authority,” Jallah declared.

The Commissioner General stressed that the move underscores the LRA’s zero-tolerance policy for corruption and misconduct.

Meanwhile, Jallah also addressed public concerns about taxes on religious institutions, clarifying that churches, mosques, and other charities will remain tax-exempt as long as their funds are directed toward charitable purposes.

“No religious institutions will pay taxes. I don’t believe they should be taxed because they are already providing services on behalf of the government, such as running schools,” he explained. “But if funds are diverted to non-charitable activities, then that institution should be taxed.”

The announcement marks one of the LRA’s largest single waves of dismissals in recent years, signaling a tougher stance on internal integrity breaches.
