Liberia Rises with ArcelorMittal for a Stronger Future

Africa-Press – Liberia. This Thursday, Liberia stands at the threshold of a transformative era as ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) inaugurates its state-of-the-art iron ore concentrator in Yekepa, Nimba County.

This monumental event marks not only a milestone for AML but also a significant leap forward in Liberia’s journey toward industrialization and economic prosperity.

The commissioning of the concentrator signifies Liberia’s first-ever production of high-grade iron ore concentrate on its own soil. This advancement elevates the nation’s position in the global mining industry and shows its potential as a hub for value-added mineral processing.

“This is more than just a job. The road to change your lives, change this business, and change this nation is just getting started,” remarked Kleber Silva, ArcelorMittal’s Global Vice President and CEO for Mining, during the induction of 236 young Liberians who will lead operations at the new facility.

AML’s Phase II Expansion Project, with an investment exceeding $3.0 billion, is set to quadruple iron ore production capacity from 5 million to 20 million tonnes per annum. This expansion is projected to generate over 5,000 new jobs during construction and 1,200 permanent positions upon completion, significantly boosting employment in Liberia, a country with one of the highest unemployment rates globally.

Moreover, the company’s contributions to government revenue are expected to surge from $35 million to $125 million annually, providing vital funds for much-needed national development initiatives.

A key component of AML’s expansion is the modernization of Liberia’s 243-kilometer heavy-haul railway, connecting Yekepa to the Port of Buchanan. With an $800 million investment, the railway is being upgraded to U.S. standards, enhancing transportation efficiency and supporting increased production volumes.

These infrastructure developments not only facilitate AML’s operations but also improve connectivity for communities along the corridor, promoting regional trade and mobility.

Beyond economic contributions, AML is deeply committed to community development and capacity building. The company has invested in massive educational programs, rehabilitated schools, and provided tuition-free, internationally certified training through its Young Professionals Program.

In a landmark move, AML recently inducted 236 young Liberians into full-time employment at the concentrator, including 108 Process Operator Learners and 128 graduates of the ArcelorMittal Liberia Training Academy. This initiative underscores AML’s dedication to nurturing local talent and promoting sustainable livelihoods.

Since commencing operations in 2005, ArcelorMittal has invested over $2.5 billion in Liberia, becoming the country’s largest foreign investor and private-sector employer. The company’s unwavering commitment to Liberia’s development is evident in its consistent tax contributions, infrastructure investments, and community engagement efforts.

As Liberia celebrates this historic inauguration, the nation acknowledges AML not just as a mining company but as a steadfast partner in its pursuit of economic growth, industrial advancement, and social progress.

The inauguration of the concentrator heralds a new chapter in Liberia’s narrative, a story of resilience, innovation, and collective ambition. It serves as a powerful reminder that through strategic partnerships and shared vision, Liberia can harness its rich resources to build a prosperous and inclusive future for all its citizens.

As the sun rises over Yekepa this Thursday, it illuminates not just a state-of-the-art facility but the boundless potential of a nation ready to rise.
