Africa-Press – Liberia. Grand Cape Mount County Senator, Simeon Taylor, says he is troubled by the manner and form in which Senator Varney Sherman and others are handling funds belonging to the County.
Senator Taylor accused Senator Sherman of individualizing about US$ 2 million dollars that was paid to the County by mining company, Bea Mountain.
The money, according to Senator Taylor, was part of the Turkish Mining Company’s Cooperate Social Responsibility pursuant to the Mineral Development Agreement (MDA).
He described as “sad and unthinkable” for Senator Sherman to allegedly put money belonging to a whole county in his personal account without the consent of the people.
Sen. Taylor: “The money is currently deposited at IB bank in an account controlled by only Sen. Sherman which is a disservice to our people.”
Senator Taylor went on to accuse Senator Sherman of recently withdrawing a little over forty thousand US dollars (40,000) from the money in the name of supporting the county teams during the just-ended National County Sports Meet.
He ceased the opportunity to deny reports of he, Senator Taylor putting a hold on the money.
The Grand Cape Mount County Senator wondered why he is being accused of putting a hold on money he doesn’t have any access to.
“How can I put a hold on money that is already in the account of another individual? I think Senator Sherman and others are playing politics with the people’s money,” he said.
He continued: “I’ve personally been exerting efforts to reach out to Senator Sherman in order to find a way to handle this matter for the good our people but he, Sen. Sherman has been very defiant.”
“The burden is upon us as leaders to be organized, transparent and accountable to our people whose interests we’re representing,” Sen. Taylor furthered.
Senator Taylor made the clarification on ELBC radio station on Wednesday.
When contacted, Senator Varney Sherman, who chairs the county’s legislative caucus, declined to comment on grounds that the matter was legal.
The situation has now left citizens pondering in whether the money will actually be used for the intended purpose if those representing them were arguing among themselves.
