Liberia to Participate in U20 WAFU ‘A’ Nations Cup in Mauritania

Africa-Press – Liberia. Liberia U20 men’s national team have been confirmed as one of the eight participants for the 2022 WAFU ‘A’ tournament in Nouakchott, Mauritania.

The regional tournament will run from August 28- September 10. It will serve as a qualifying tournament for the 2023 Africa U20 Cup of Nations that will be held in Egypt.

The junior national team have never been to the U20 nations cup after missing out in a few qualifiers that they participated in.

Mauritania, The Gambia, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Cape Verde, Senegal and Sierra Leone are the eight teams that will participate in the upcoming tournament.

The eight teams will be divided into two groups. The top two teams will progress to the semifinals, where the two finalists will earn qualification for U20 AFCON in Egypt.

The draw for the tournament will take place on Thursday, June 30, in Nouakchott.

This will be the first major international for coach Tapha Manneh and boys since taking over the job as head coach of the team.

Recently, the team has their first test when they faced Morocco U20 in a double clash international friendly at the ATS. Liberia lost 2-0 in the first leg and settled to a 2-2 draw in the return leg.

During the last edition of the WAFU ‘A’ U20 nations cup held in the median edition held in Liberia 2018, the junior Lone Star, under the guidance of former Head Coach Christopher Wreh, progressed to the final, but were defeated by 2-1 by The Gambia at the SKD Sports stadium.
