In its quest to fulfill promises made to the people, especially the younger generation, the Liberian Government during the weekend, October 8, 202, launched a twenty million Liberian Dollars scholarship drive in Kakata, the administrative city of Margibi County by the Minister of State for Presidential Affairs, Mr. Nathaniel Fala McGill.
Highlighting major contributors to0wards the fund drive, Minister McGill disclosed that President George M Weah has committed himself to provide half of the amount, meaning he has contributed Ten Million Liberian Dollars, while the First Lady; Madam Clara Weah will made available One Million Liberian Dollars.
The remaining nine million Liberians dollars, according to Minister McGill, will be provided by Vice President Jewel Howard Taylor and the rest of the cabinet members.
The Minister of State for Presidential Affairs further clarified that the scholarship program is only for school-going children in upper Margibi County. He said the lower belt of the county will experience same shortly.
Making Remarks on behave of the Margibi County Legislative Caucus, The chair of the caucus and district #1 Representative Tibelrosa Summoh Tarponweh, stressed the important role of education to national development.
Representative Tarponweh said, while leaders of Margibi County are exerting efforts to build up the resource capacity of the young people within the County, the County remains challenged in supporting educational activities due to the lack of adequate funding.
“Education remains a major fulcrum in developing any country, Mr. Minister, the fact that you will not forget to come back and think about the human resource development of our children makes us to tell you that Margibi will not forget this good gesture. We are grateful people. We as caucus members see these challenges in our various districts in educating our children”, the Margibi County Legislative Chairperson explained.
Also speaking, Margibi County Superintendent Jerry Varnie lauded President Weah and all those who supported the scholarship drive. Superintendent Varnie asserted that a specialized committee has been setup to spearhead the entire scholarship program.
The occasion was also graced by several former and current government officials, traditional leaders, civil society organizations, residents of the county, among others.
