Africa-Press – Liberia. As Liberians prepare to cast their ballots on October 10, the Free Liberia Movement (FLM) has raised concerns about Liberia’s electoral system, calling for an overhaul of the country’s electoral system.
The FLM, which is a flagship advocacy arm of Universal Human Rights International (UHRI) also stressed the need for equal opportunities for Liberians through a U.S. visa waiver.
In a recent dispatch from Boston, Massachusetts, the founder of the organization, Rev. Torli Krua, said, “Liberia wasn’t created as an African democracy. Therefore, Liberia cannot automatically become a democracy based on elections conducted in a corrupt and deceptive electoral system that caters to wealthy individuals and excludes citizens’ input and participation.”
Rev. Krua, a prominent Liberian human rights activist based in Boston, also stated, “this corrupt and deceptive system under which Liberia was formed continues to haunt its government and people; hence, a need for a rebirth is inevitable.”
However, this year’s advocacy comes at a time when Liberia is conducting its presidential and legislative elections. There are over 1,000 aspirants, including 20 presidential aspirants, vying for just 90 seats, according to the National Elections Commission (NEC).
But according to Krua, Liberians are being deceived by politicians who claim to be ‘fixers’ or’redeemers’’. “A corrupt tree cannot be rescued or fixed when it’s bearing corrupt fruits,” he said.
“It must be uprooted and a new seed planted. Matthew 12:33 says, ‘Make a tree good, and its fruits will be good. Or make a tree corrupt, and its fruits will be corrupt. A tree is known by its fruits,” he maintained.
Rev. Krua has been advocating for the rebirth of Liberia since he launched the Free Liberia Movement a few years ago.
Through extensive research, including review of historical documents, Rev. Krua says Liberia was founded by the U.S. Government through a corrupt and crooked arrangement with the sole purpose of enslaving more Africans than granting them their freedom.
Krua also called on the U.S. to “Mitigate ongoing harm from racism, American colonization, and Slavery through public confession, repentance, restitution, reparations, and payments of damages.
He asserted, “There is also a need for inclusion of all Liberians in the USA as beneficiaries of the Liberian Refugee Immigration Fairness Act; Grant U.S. visas to all Liberians to access education, employment, and business opportunities without visa restrictions.”
“I am saying this because Liberia was unlawfully designed, created, and sustained by corrupt American slave masters to protect the property (slaves) of slave masters as well as advance American domestic and foreign policy agendas.
200 years later, Liberia is still corrupt because corruption is in its DNA and therefore Liberia cannot be rescued or fixed by politicians because Liberia’s corrupt system of governance was designed to enrich and empower politicians like ‘Garbage in-garbage out, Krua added.”
Meanwhile, the Free Liberia Movement is at the same time proposing the holding of a National Sovereignty Conference across Liberia, with a mandate for Liberians to avoid participating in any elections, which it said were only intended to enrich politicians.
He added that the conference, once held, will promote the rebirth of Liberia, give all Liberians an equal opportunity, and ensure that they are part and parcel of the country’s decision making process.
