Africa-Press – Liberia. The General Auditing Commission (GAC), has indicted the Ministry of Justice for misappropriation of U$19,000, intended to feed inmates at the Monrovia Central Prisoners.

Justice Ministry authorities claimed the money was used for security operations in Gbarpolu County during the 2020 Special Senatorial Elections.

The Justice Ministry management of the prison system in Liberia has been termed poor and conditions in prisons deplorable.

A GAC report to Liberia’s Legislature said several recommendations intended to improve conditions in prisons have yet to be implemented by the Justice Ministry.

The report said the Monrovia Central Prison, intended for 374 inmates, has over 1,236 inmates, a serious problem of overcrowding and fear of outbreak of communicable diseases.

Prison authorities said the quality of food for inmates is poor, with one meal a day, due to limited government budgetary support.

The monthly budget of US$5,000 for food has been cut to US$3,000.00.

Water supply and health care service at various prisons in Liberia are said to be poor due to insufficient funding by the government, which recently announced a national budget of over US$785. million for fiscal year 2021-2022.
