Africa-Press – Liberia. Liberia and the United States of America have come a long way since the declaration of Independence in 1847, which was propelled by the American Colonization Society (ACS).

The Independence of Liberia saw the modeling of the nation’s constitution most likely similar to the American’s constitution.

The influence of early Americans and persons with indigenous ties to America and their efforts to the independence of Liberia led to the naming of streets and places in Liberia after them.

Our Founding Fathers named Ducor, the original name of Monrovia, to Christopolis. Later, Christopolis was changed to Monrovia, named after America’s fifth President James Monroe.

Similarly, Newport Street in Monrovia was named after Matilda Newport, a founding female pioneer (settler) of Liberia from the United States of America.

Due to the similarities and bond subsisting between America and Liberia, this writer looks at fond similarities between Liberia’s President-elect Joseph Nyumah Boakai and President Joseph Robinette Biden, Jr. of the United States of America.

Mr. Joseph R. Biden, Jr. is a politician and the 46th and current President of the United States of America.

Mr. Joseph N. Boakai is a politician and the 25th President of Liberia.

President Joe Biden served as the 47th Vice President of America to former President Barack Obama, America’s first black President for two consecutive terms (2009-2017).

President-elect Joe Boakai similarly served as Vice President to President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Liberia’s and Africa’s first female democratically elected President.

America’s current President Joe R. Biden was born on November 20, 1942, and is 81 years old while Liberia’s President-elect Joe N. Boakai was born on November 30, 1944.

They both were elected on the cusp of the Octogenarian phase of their lives. Thereby, being the first presidents of both countries to be elected at that age on their first win for the presidencies.

President Joe R. Biden is the first American President whose hometown is Delaware, and Liberia 25th President-elect, Joseph Nyumah Boakai, will be the first President of Liberia to hail from Lofa County.

Biden is the first man since George H.W. Bush to have served both as Vice President and President of the United States. Similarly, President Boakai will be the first Vice President to become elected President since President William V.S. Tubman.

President-elect Joe Boakai has four children (Tamba, Joseph, Randa and Charlotte) and similarly, America’s 46th President Joe Biden has four children (Hunter Biden, Naomi Christian Biden, Ashley Biden and Beau Biden).

Both men have exemplified public records in the Legislature of their respective countries; Biden served the U.S. House of Senate representing the state of Delaware for thirty-six years while President Boakai served as President of the Liberian Senate for two consecutive terms.

America’s 46th President, Joe Robinette Biden, Jr., was inaugurated on January 20, 2021 at age 78 and Joe Boakai will be inaugurated on January 22, 2024 at age 79.

Both Presidents are married and are Christians — Biden being a Catholic and Boakai a Baptist. Both Biden and Boakai are the first elected presidents from the Silent Generation. And, as first-namesakes, both also share the first and last initials, “J.B.”
