LMHRA Calls on Sports Writers to Support Fight Against Fake Medicines in Athletics

Africa-Press – Liberia. LMHRA Managing Director Dr. Luke L. Bawo emphasized the vital role the media can play in promoting clean sports and protecting public health.

The Liberia Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Authority (LMHRA) has called on members of the Sports Writers Association of Liberia (SWAL) to actively support the fight against substandard and falsified medicines in the country, particularly in the sports sector.

Speaking at a recent engagement with sports journalists, LMHRA Managing Director Dr. Luke L. Bawo emphasized the vital role the media can play in promoting clean sports and protecting public health.

“The pursuit of excellence in sports has, at times, been challenged by the use of unsafe or illegal substances,” Dr. Bawo said. “Athletes, regulatory bodies, and the media must work together to protect the integrity of our sports.”

Dr. Bawo urged sports journalists to go beyond event reporting and act as advocates for ethical practices in sports. He said their voices are crucial in raising awareness about the dangers of performance-enhancing drugs and counterfeit pharmaceuticals.

“Sports writers are not just storytellers—they are watchdogs for fair play and champions of athletes’ well-being,” he noted.

The LMHRA stressed the need for stronger collaboration between regulators, sports institutions, and the media. Such partnerships, Dr. Bawo said, are essential for creating a safe and credible environment where athletes can perform without fear of health risks or unfair competition.

The event also served to recognize the achievements of both athletes and journalists, with the LMHRA congratulating recent award recipients for their contributions to Liberian sports.
