Lofa County University Harvests 3.5 Hectares of Rice

Africa-Press – Liberia. In what has been described as a major milestone in the institution’s pursuit of self-sufficiency and practical education, Lofa County University (LCU) on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, harvested 3.5 hectares of lowland rice from its university farm.

The harvest, which took place on the university’s demonstration site in Voinjama, marks a tangible outcome of LCU’s commitment to integrating theory with practice while contributing to Liberia’s national food security and economic development.

The exercise was led by the University’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Isaac Poda, and brought together senior administrators, faculty, staff, and students, all actively participating in the harvest activities.

According to projections, the 3.5-hectare rice field is expected to yield between two to three tons of rice. The initiative is part of LCU’s broader strategic plan aimed at enhancing institutional self-reliance and supporting the national government’s ARREST Agenda, which emphasizes agriculture as a cornerstone of inclusive development.

Speaking during the harvest ceremony, Dr. Poda described the achievement as both symbolic and practical.

“Today’s activity is more than an agricultural yield; it is a harvest of hope and a testament to our resolve,” Dr. Poda said. “By working this land, we are not only putting theory into practice and contributing to food security, but we are also taking a decisive step toward securing our institution’s financial future. This project directly aligns with the national ARREST Agenda by showcasing the transformative power of agriculture while creating a sustainable revenue stream to support the university beyond the limits of the national budget.”

The farm project serves as a living laboratory for students enrolled in LCU’s agricultural sciences program, providing hands-on exposure to modern farming practices—from land preparation to post-harvest management.

University officials say the success of the rice harvest demonstrates LCU’s growing role as a catalyst for community development, innovation, and agricultural advancement in Liberia’s northern region.
