Monrovia — A Liberian football enthusiast is calling on the Liberia Football Association (LFA) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports to urgently investigate why the Lone Star continues to underperform in both CAF and FIFA competitions.
Solomon Zeo made the appeal on Tuesday, October 14, shortly after Liberia’s 1-1 draw with Equatorial Guinea in Malabo, a result that left both countries out of contention for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
“For more than 23 years, since the George Weah era ended after the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations, Liberia has failed to qualify for AFCON or the World Cup,” Zeo told FrontPage Africa.
“The players that have represented the country since then lack the necessary skills and preparation to compete internationally. That is why the Lone Star keeps struggling.”
Zeo stressed that both the LFA and the Ministry bear responsibility for the team’s continued setbacks.
“These officials oversee all aspects of national football, from player development to coaching and logistics,” he said. “They have the knowledge and authority to diagnose the problems and implement solutions. It is high time they go back to the drawing board and find out what is truly holding the Lone Star back.”
He called for a comprehensive review of the national football program, including improvements in youth leagues, grassroots talent development, and coaching standards, arguing that short-term fixes will not reverse Liberia’s decades-long decline in football.
“We need a long-term plan, not excuses,” Zeo said. “The LFA and the Ministry must act decisively if Liberia is to compete on the African and world stage again.”
