Africa-Press – Liberia. Liberia football champions LPRC Oilers have been drawn against South Africa’s Orlando Pirates in the CAF Confederation Cup play-offs. The first leg will be played on 28 November and the return leg is on 5 December.
The winner from the two ties will advance to the group stage of the CAF cup. Oilers were eliminated by Moroccan side Raja Casablanca in the CAF Champions League second round.
The Liberian outfit lost the second leg 2-0 at the Stade Mohammed V stadium in Casablanca on 23 October with goals from Mahmoud Benhalib and Oussama Soukhane in the seventh and 26th minutes.
Raja defeated Oilers 2-0 in the first leg at the Stade de Marrakech in Marrakech, Morocco on 17 October with goals from El Houssine Rahimi and Mahmoud Benhalib scored in the 23rd and 45th minutes respectively.
The Oil Boys made it to the second round of the Champions League following their elimination of Togolese top flight club Asko De Kara after the two legs in the first round 4-2 on aggregate.
The Oil Boys and 15 teams eliminated from the champions league were paired against the 16 teams in the Confederations Cup, making a total of 32 teams in the play-offs, which is the fourth round.
The winner from Oilers and Pirates ties will be paired in four groups of four teams and the prize money for qualification to the fourth round is US$275K. If they do qualify from the fourth round to the third round, they woukd be rewarded an additional US$275K.
Another qualification, this time to the quarter-finals, would see the Liberian club pocket a whopping US$350K, then US450K to the semi-finals and qualification to the grand final would see them pocket either US. 1.25 million as winners or 625K as runner-up.
The last time a Liberian club played a South African side in the CAF Confederation Cup playoff round was in 2017 when BYC played SuperSport United. BYC lost 6-1 on aggregate after a 1-1 draw at home and a 5-0 defeat in South Africa respectively.
LPRC Oilers coach, Copper Sannah, was the coach then at BYC and in the same position as 2017 when he came close to reaching the group stage of the Champions League and CAF Cup.
