Africa-Press – Liberia. Monrovia—The Multi-Actors Platform on Land Governance and Responsible Agricultural Investment in Liberia (MAP Liberia Land Platform), in collaboration with the Liberia Land Authority (LLA) and key stakeholders, is set to host the second National Land Conference (NLC) in Ganta, Nimba County, on September 23-24, 2024. The conference will focus on land rights and land reform in Liberia.
A joint statement, released on September 9, 2024, from MAP Liberia, the LLA, and various land-sector actors, announced the event, which has the support of the Liberian government and international development partners.
This year’s NLC follows the inaugural event held in March 2022 in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County. The theme for the 2024 conference is, “Looking Backwards, Looking Forward After the First National Land Conference.”
The primary aim of the second NLC is to provide a platform for stakeholders to assess the progress of land reforms and land-based investments, with particular focus on livelihood and food security. The conference will also identify challenges and opportunities to expedite the land reform process in Liberia.
Over 200 delegates from government agencies, civil society organizations, academia, community-based organizations, national and international institutions, and donor partners are expected to attend the two-day event.
The conference, according to the release, will cover key topics such as customary land formalization, land rights for women, youth, and people with disabilities, land administration and registration, conflict resolution through Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), decentralization of land services, and the connection between land rights and responsible agricultural investments.
In addition to assessing the progress of the Land Rights Act, the conference will review policy improvements and strategies for boosting agricultural investment, enhancing food security, and addressing land-related challenges.
The event aims to generate actionable commitments and recommendations to accelerate land reform implementation.
Liberian President Joseph N. Boakai is expected to lead a government delegation to the official launch of the conference on September 24, 2024.
The release disclosed that one key highlight of the event is the dedication of an entire day to Women’s Land Rights Day. National women’s organizations and their international partners will collaborate to review the status of women’s land rights and outline a strategic roadmap.
This special day will be held under the theme “Collaborative Solutions: Partnership for Advancing Women’s Land Rights.”, the statement divulged.
Meanwhile, the conference organizers have expressed their gratitude to institutions that have pledged their support and encouraged others to contribute as time is of the essence.
