Africa-Press – Liberia. It is more than three years since the Director General of the General Service Agency Mary Broh was last seen in the public demolishing makeshift structure. She is now back, but this time, to work with the City Government of Monrovia in preparing for the year-end holidays and the impending 2022 Bicentennial Commemoration.
On October 21, 2021, Monrovia City Mayor Jefferson T. Koijee, constituted what he termed as Citizens’ Engagement Board. Mayor Koijee named 14 Liberians, making Madam Broh the Chairperson of the Board and Amb Juli Endee as Co-chairperson.
The Citizens’ Engagement Board work began November 1, 2021 and January 7, 2022. Speaking to journalists at the Monrovia City Hall on Tuesday, Madam Broh praised Mayor Koijee for the confidence he reposed in her.
“The Citizens’ Engagement Board will work with the City Government of Monrovia to devise strategies and plans for preparing the City of Monrovia for year-end holidays and the impending 2022 Bicentennial Commemoration and provide advice for the Urban Renewal Initiatives (URI),” Madam Broh said.
According to the GSA boss, the URI is a road map of 35 deliverables for the city. She added that the Citizens’ Engagement Board will report to the Mayor of the City of Monrovia on the day-to-day happenings about the initiative.
“We welcome the full participation of the Montserrado County Superintendent, Madam Florence Brandy, as well as Chairman and members of the Montserrado County Legislative Caucus, township commissioners and tribal governors, and community leaders as we all work for our beloved city,” she said.
Madam Broh: “We are also calling on the Ministry of Public Works, the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation, the Liberia Electricity Corporation, the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Disaster Management Agency to join us.”
According to Madam Broh, in consultation and by approval of Mayor Koijee, the Citizens’ Engagement Board shall work to provide guidance on sanitation plans and actions for the City of Monrovia.
Advise on cultural programs that promote the image of the City of Monrovia and develop ideas that will impact the general state of the environment and security in the City of Monrovia, she said.
The GSA boss added that her team will liaise with structures and departments of the Monrovia City Corporation to engage communities and stakeholders to promote a clean city; provide ideas on seeking and attracting resources to carry out plans, and invite citizens’ participation in activities that will impact the long-term governance of the City of Monrovia.
“Since the announcement by the Mayor, the CEB has met and consulted for the finalization of a work plan that shall seek to ensure that Monrovia will be thoroughly cleaned and prepared for the upcoming year-end holidays and the year 2022,” she added.
According to Madam Broh, the work plan of the Citizens’ Engagement Broad will enhance public awareness through sustained media engagement. Also, a community-based approach to waste management solutions; active public participation in developing long-term urban governance advisory; and the innovative cultural and creative arts as a medium for promoting national and historical pride.
“The Citizens’ Engagement Board will embark on a successful journey only if the CEB will receive the moral support of all the residents of Monrovia,” she said.
Using existing community structures, the CEB will work through task teams and community leaders to implement an accelerated action plan to carry out massive cleaning up of the streets, neighborhoods, public places, beaches, waterfronts, cemeteries and drainages in Monrovia, Madam Broh said.
“Over 1000 community residents will benefit from short term hire services; Monrovia City will be beautified and decorated with an effective community-based mechanism coordinated for sustained long term sanitation and urban planning. Disorganized street-selling and makeshift structures that deface the outlook of the city will be addressed,” she said.
The GSA boss called on citizens to paint their buildings before the 25th of December. She also warned residents to take care of their overflowing septic tanks.
