MPC Calls on New Speaker Koon, House to Prioritize Tackling Economic Hardships

Africa-Press – Liberia. The Movement for Progressive Change (MPC) has called on Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon and members of the House of Representatives to focus on addressing Liberia’s growing economic challenges following Koon’s election as Speaker.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the MPC urged lawmakers to set aside political divisions and concentrate on what it termed “bread-and-butter” issues, including unemployment, rising living costs, and poor public services.

“This moment marks an important turning point for the Legislature and the nation,” the party stated, describing the speakership election as a peaceful resolution of recent political tension.

The MPC, led by political leader Simeon Freeman, congratulated Koon and praised the House of Representatives for respecting the Supreme Court’s recent ruling, which cleared the way for the election.

The party also commended outgoing Speaker J. Fonati Koffa for his resignation, calling it a “bold step” that demonstrated “political maturity and a willingness to put country above self.”

MPC further urged Speaker Koon to lead with fairness and inclusivity, emphasizing that unity within the Legislature is critical to advancing laws and policies that benefit ordinary citizens.

Freeman called for stronger legislative leadership, greater transparency, and a unified national vision. “We must move forward together — united in vision, action, and responsibility,” he said.
