Africa-Press – Liberia. The 2025 National High School Football and Kickball Championships are heating up across Liberia, with thrilling fixtures taking place this week in nine counties. Student-athletes are competing for county honors and national recognition in the week-long event, which resumed on Monday, July 14.
Organized by National High School Sports, the tournament aims to use athletics as a tool to promote school enrollment and improve academic engagement among students.
Tuesday’s fixtures brought exciting matchups to Maryland, Bomi, and Grand Gedeh counties.
In Maryland County, the Pleebo Sports Arena hosted doubleheaders, with J.S. Pratt High School facing Fatima High School in both kickball and football. The day continued with Pleebo High School taking on Sodoken High School, drawing a large crowd from the southeastern region.
In Bomi County, Tubmanburg saw C.H. Dewey High School take on United Methodist Pentecostal High School in football. Meanwhile, St. Dominic Catholic High School faced Anderson Weamah United Methodist High School in what has become a tradition of competitive high school rivalry.
Grand Gedeh County also saw action at the Albert White Stadium in Zwedru. Zwedru Multilateral High School went up against M. Nixon Garlo High School, while Baptist High School clashed with Matula Wilson Assembly of God in a rivalry known for its intensity in both football and kickball.
The tournament runs through Friday, with matches scheduled across Grand Cape Mount, Grand Kru, Nimba, Gbarpolu, Sinoe, and Lofa counties.
Wednesday’s fixtures include Bo Community High versus Sinje High in Grand Cape Mount. In Grand Kru, 2017 football runner-up P.G. Wolo High School returns to action.
On Thursday, Nimba County will host a triple-header in Ganta. Teams in action include Ganta Methodist, Francis Nya Maweah, Rainbow Covenant, and Messiah Christian Academy, promising a day of fierce competition.
Friday’s fixtures will be held in Gbarpolu and Sinoe. Lofa County will stage games across four towns—Zorzor, Voinjama, Foya, and Kolahun—featuring over a dozen schools.
Winners of the 2025 tournament will receive substantial prizes. Champion teams will earn US$7,000, gold medals, a championship trophy, and an opportunity to travel to Ghana or Nigeria for friendly international matches.
Runners-up will receive US$5,000. Most Valuable Players (MVPs) in both football and kickball will be awarded US$1,000 each along with sponsorship packages.
Since its inception in 2017, the National High School Football and Kickball Championship has become a leading platform for student-athletes, encouraging not only physical fitness but also academic growth.
“This is not just a tournament; it’s a movement. We’re using sports to inspire excellence in classrooms, on fields, and in communities,” a spokesperson for National High School Sports said.
As the tournament continues, attention now shifts to Wednesday’s matches in Grand Cape Mount and Grand Kru, where more talent is expected to shine on the national stage.
