Africa-Press – Liberia. The National Elections Commission (NEC) Lofa County branch has completed the replacement of damaged and lost voter registration cards ahead of the May 10, 2022, Lofa County Senatorial by-election.
Speaking with reporters at the start of the replacement exercise on March 28, at the Upper Lofa County NEC office on the outskirts of Voinjama City, Magistrate Albert Smith disclosed that the replacement exercise is expected to last till April 2 and will take place simultaneously in all the five electoral districts of Foya, Vahun, Kolahun, Voinjama and Zorzor.
Smith indicated that the exercise is also intended to pave the way for an estimated 156,929 eligible voters in Lofa County to take part in the Senatorial by-election slated for May 10.
Meanwhile, Smith is urging the public to take advantage of the replacement exercise, noting that NEC offices will not compromise any lost or damaged voter registration card case during the upcoming Senatorial by-election.
The Lofa County Senatorial seat was recently declared vacant by NEC following the conviction of Brownie J, Samukai who had won the seat in an earlier poll.
He overwhelmingly won the Lofa County Senatorial poll in 2020, but could not take seat due to his conviction by a lower court that was upheld by the Supreme Court of Liberia.
Samukai was indicted in 2019 along with two of his deputies by government for misapplying over one million United States dollars belonging to the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL).
He was then the Minister of National Defense under the administration of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
