Africa-Press – Liberia. Superintendent Kou Meapeh Gono of Nimba County is passionate about Liberia’s only man-made lake, Lake Teleh, as she announces plan transform the facility into tourism hub.
Nimba County Superintendent Kou Meapeh Gono has announced plans to transform Lake Teleh, the largest man-made lake in Liberia.
The lake, located in Sanniquellie, Nimba County, has existed for decades, but has been neglected by past local leaders, including national government.
Superintendent Gono emphasized that her administration is committed to changing the narrative surrounding the Lake, disclosing plans to renovate Lake Teleh to meet modern standards. She said the transformation aligns with government’s ‘ARREST AGENDA’.
The Nimba County Superintendent reaffirmed her commitment to collaborating with relevant stakeholders, saying her goal is to ensure that the Lake becomes a prime vacation destination.
According to Madam Gono, the renovation will turn Lake Teleh into a tourism hotspot that will serve as an educational site for students and researchers, promising that visitors will be able to explore its historical and cultural significance after the transformation exercise.
She described the Lake as a potential source of local resource mobilization and that once renovated, it will feature modern amenities, including speed boats.
“These enhancements will improve access and boost recreational activities”, Madam Gono said.
Madam Gono also explained that the success of the project depends on collective efforts, thereby calling on all Nimbaians to support the initiative wholeheartedly.
Highlighting the importance of preserving heritage, she reflected on the past, adding that forefathers of Nimba walked long distances, carrying water to establish the Lake, so their labor and sacrifice were intended to leave a lasting legacy.
She stressed that such efforts must not be forgotten or wasted, saying renovating the Lake will honor the memory of those who built it and also restore pride in Liberia’s cultural history.
Lake Teleh is the only man-made lake of its kind in the country. Its size and unique origin make it a potential landmark for tourism and economic development.
She lamented how past administrations failed to invest in the Lake, disclosing that decades of neglect have left it in a deteriorated state.
Madam Gono told local journalists about obstacle that is delaying the renovation process, which has to do with ongoing construction of the Sanniquellie General Market. She said once the market is completed and vendors are relocated, renovation work will begin immediately.
She stated that preparations are already underway behind the scene, indicating that her team is mobilizing support and resources to start the project.
She highlighted that community involvement is a top priority, as she wants locals to take ownership of the project, by contributing ideas and labor.
Madam Gono also acknowledged the role of private partners, saying government would welcome investment from tourism developers, while partnerships will accelerate progress and add value to the project.
The Superintendent believes Lake Teleh can also boost job creation, adding that renovation and tourism development will create employment opportunities for locals.
She explained that educational programs will be introduced around the Lake, where schools will organize field trips to learn about environmental conservation and history, noting that such activities will deepen youth engagement with national heritage.
She is confident that the project is feasible, highlighting that her team is determined and passionate about delivering results and her ambition is to make Lake Teleh a national pride once again.
She appealed to all Liberians to join the cause, pleading that unity and cooperation are vital for success. The dream of reviving Lake Teleh belongs to every Liberian, not just Nimbaians, Madam Gono reaffirmed.
“The future of Lake Teleh lies in the collective commitment of the people. With the right support, it can become a thriving tourism center. My vision is to see Lake Teleh shine as a symbol of resilience and unity”, Madam Gono stated.
