Nimba University Faculty debunks Higher Education Commission

Africa-Press – Liberia. The Faculty Association of Nimba University in Nimba County resists the plan by the director of the Commission on Higher Education, Dr. Edward Lama Wonkeryor, to replace the president of Nimba University, Dr. Jesse N. Mongrue.

The Faculty Association, in a communication, reveals that Dr. Wonkeryor has already recommended that President Joseph Boakai nominate a new president for the University because Dr. Mongrue allegedly lacks oversight ability.

The Association quotes the High Education Commission Boss as also saying that Nimba University, under the administration of Dr. Jesse N. Mongrue, is retrogressing, with all development at a standstill, thus calling for an audit of the present administration.

It says the statement by the director of higher education is not true and has the propensity to undermine the growth and development of Nimba University.

Dr. Edward Lama Wonkeryor is a former president of Nimba University, whom Dr. Jesse Noah Mongrue succeeded.

According to the Faculty, during the administration of Dr. Wonkeryor, activities at the University were characterized by demonstrations, lack of communication, reporting system, and accountability with widespread corruption.

It further reveals that the Commission on Higher Education has submitted one P.N. Gobary and others to Senator Prince Yormie Johnson to be forwarded to President Boakai to nominate a new president for Nimba University.

However, the Faculty Association notes Dr. Jesse Noah Mongrue, who has spent only two years at Nimba University, has achieved tremendously in the areas of human resource and capacity development, sending four staff for studies to China, Ghana, and Sierra Leone, while three others are pursuing PhD studies in Nigeria respectively.

It continues that the embattled Nimba University president has promoted unity and love amongst students, faculty, and administration, disclosing that because of his demonstrated adherence to transparency and accountability, Dr. Mongrue was issued a check to travel to Botswana, but he returned the check to the finance office since the trip was not made.

“Overall, Dr. Mongrue is a peaceful loving and caring administrator”, the Faculty expresses.

The Association says that because of his tremendous achievements; it is asking Senator Johnson and President Joseph N. Boakai to retain Dr. Jesse N. Mongrue for the sake of geographical balance in leadership at Nimba University and Nimba County.
