Through the National Identification Registry (NIR), the Government of Liberia has announced a mass-based registration for citizens and foreign nationals.
“The Board of Registrars and Management of the NIR under the auspices of the Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs will this Thursday launch a roadmap for the comprehensive mass enrolment of citizens and foreign residents into the national biometric identification system,” the institution said Tuesday, April 30, 2024.
NIR Director of Communication Daniel Sloh Sargbe disclosed that the mass-based registration process is meant to share information that can help citizens and residents understand the entity’s work.
In keeping with the president’s pronouncement that his government will strengthen the NIR to build the needed capacity, Sargbe said the entity is about to launch the exercise.
It will capture the comprehensive biometric data needed to feed all government institutions, including the National Elections Commission (NEC), in accordance with the agency’s Act.
However, Sargbe disclosed that Article 3.2 (f) of the Act states that one of the key functions of the NIR shall be to advise and assist the Government of Liberia and its agencies in improving and strengthening the collection, storage evaluation, and security of information and documents collected to register birth, issue passports and other documents.
“As a result of the roadmap, we hope to have an enhanced national biometric identification system, which feeds all data, as well as the sustainability of [the] safe environment, proper access to services, and the welfare of citizens,” he continued.
Sargbe used the occasion to encourage relevant government institutions to form part of the launching ceremony, which will bring together scores of government officials, including President Joseph Nyumah Boakai.
