Pres Boakai Reaffirms Liberia's Commitment to West African Healthcare

Africa-Press – Liberia. President Joseph Boakai has reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery systems across West Africa, emphasizing the importance of regional collaboration in tackling public health challenges.

The message was delivered on his behalf by Ambassador-at-Large Charles Snetter during the opening of the 18th Biannual General Meeting of the West African Postgraduate College of Nursing and Midwifery (WAPCNM), held in Congo Town.

President Boakai praised WAPCNM for choosing Monrovia as the host city and called on delegates to engage in discussions that will enhance healthcare services across the region.

“The Government of Liberia remains committed to strengthening healthcare not only within our borders but across the West African region,” the President said through Ambassador Snetter. “We are actively working with other nations to combat the spread and outbreak of diseases, and we deeply appreciate the efforts of nurses and midwives in that fight.”

WAPCNM President Dr. Saleh Garba used the occasion to appeal for financial support from regional governments to construct the college’s permanent headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria. He noted that although a plot of land has been secured, international donor support has decreased significantly, making local government assistance vital.

On the second day of the conference, Liberian public health expert Mrs. Woseh Gobeh-Weah delivered the keynote address. She recommended a stronger scientific approach to nursing and midwifery and called on healthcare professionals to push for increased government investment in the sector.

“We must advocate for more funding and embrace evidence-based practices if we are to improve healthcare outcomes in our region,” Mrs. Gobeh-Weah said.

During the event, the college awarded honorary fellowships to several individuals in recognition of their contributions to healthcare in West Africa.

Among the honorees were Liberia’s First Lady, Madam Kartumu Boakai; keynote speaker Woseh Gobeh-Weah; and development finance expert Augustus Flomo.

The conference was held under the theme: “Collaboration and Partnership Towards Improving Quality Healthcare in the West African Region” and brought together over 450 healthcare professionals and policymakers from across the subregion.
