Africa-Press – Liberia. — Calls upon 36 union members to help him reawaken the institution
The President of the Press Union (PUL), Julius Kullie Kanubah, has appointed members to four of the five Permanent Committees of the union, calling upon 36 astute and talented individuals to assist in revitalizing the union following a two-year period of dormancy due to a disputed election in 2022.
With these appointments, made on Tuesday, November 5, the union is now preparing to resume operations under new leadership. President Kanubah has diligently consulted with colleagues to form a team that will guide the union for the next three years.
In a press release, President Kanubah said that the appointments, done in consonance with the Constitution, aim to activate and enhance the effective and inclusive governance of the PUL after years of institutional paralysis.
The newly appointed committees include Membership, Intellectual Discourse, Welfare, and Sports and Entertainment, each with specific mandates and roles. The appointed individuals are respected Liberian journalists and communication professionals, chosen to bring their expertise to the union’s governance.
Kanubah emphasized the importance of integrity and dedication in fulfilling their duties.
Kanubah expressed delight that the PUL is steadily being restored, applauding those appointed for agreeing to make their services available to the Union in these crucial times of institutional restoration.
The PUL President admonished those appointed to serve with distinction, integrity, and dignity, urging them to take their appointments as one of the highest honors and callings in the service and interest of the PUL and the integrity of journalism, media and communication.
The following encompasses the list of the constituted Permanent Committees and the respective appointees:
Membership Committee
Article 15 Section 2 Mandate: The duties of the Membership Committee shall be to receive and screen all applicants for membership to the Union consistent with the PUL Constitution, and conduct membership drives when necessary. Members shall be made to sign a behavior bond.
The members include Mrs. Winnie Saywah–Jimmy, Chairperson; Mr. D. Edwin Clarke, Co-chairperson; Mr. Jutonue Y. Kollie, Secretary; Atty. Jebbeh N. Johnson, Member; Mr. George Des Kennedy, Member; Ms. Munah S. Lagreen, Member; Mr. Marcus Malayea, Member; Mr. Henry Gboluma, Member; and Mrs. Olive Thomas–Dweh, Member.
Intellectual Discourse Committee
Article 15 Section 3 Mandate: The duties of the IDC shall be: (a) To organize various activities that promote and cultivate goodwill and understanding among members and between the Union and the public; (b) To organize lectures and talk shows for the benefit and improvement of relations with its members and the public, including the production of the PUL official newsletter and magazine; and (c) To organize social and educational activities in and out of the country.
The members include Madam Eva Flomo, Chairperson; Mr. Sam Andrews, Co-chairperson; Mr. William Harmon, Secretary; Mr. Kelvin Demey, Member; Mrs. Princess Howard Tennie, Member; Mrs. Inez Reeves Soko, Member; Mr. Oscar Mulbah, Member; Mr. Wroinbee Elton Tiah, Member; Mr. Elvis Gono, Member.
Welfare Committee
Article 15 Section 6 Mandate: The duties of the Welfare Committee shall be as follows: (a) Monitor the general working conditions of members of the Union and make recommendations on such things like salaries, retirement schemes, insurance and other benefits offered by the media employers as stipulated in a duly executed collective bargaining agreement between the Union and such employers; (b) Put in place an effective health and welfare scheme for members of the Union.
The members include Mr. George Stewart, Chairperson; Mrs. Estelle Liberty–Kemoh, Co-chairperson; Mrs. Oretha Bundoo–Seh, Secretary; Ms. Lucia Dohr, Member; Ms. Janjay Campbell, Member; Ms. Mercy Kpaingbay, Member; Mrs. Irene D. Horton, Member; Mr. Joseph Sayon, Member; Mr. B. Bobby Addison, Member.
Sports and Entertainment Committee
Article 15 Section 7 Mandate: The Sports and Entertainment Committee shall be responsible to: (a) Organize and execute all sporting activities within the Union and between the Union and other institutions; (b) Organize entertainment and recreational activities for members of the Union as often as necessary to ensure social harmony and cohesion within the Union and with other professional and civic organizations.
The members include Ms. Martina Brooks, Chairperson; Mr. Momoh Siryon, Co-chairperson; Mr. Kolubah Zayzay, Secretary; Ms. Naomi Tappia, Member; Ms. Dorcas Tebeh Gboerreh-Boe, Member; Mr. Richard F. Manuba, Member; Mr. William Decent Toe, Member; Mr. Duplexe R. Jaeploe, Member; Mr. Michael Solomon, Member.
Together, the 36 Liberian journalists, media and communication professionals bring together over three decades of outstanding work and solid education credentials, along with a strong reputation of professionalism, credibility, excellence, and impartiality.
Importantly, all appointed Chairpersons automatically qualify to serve on the Executive Committee, which is the second highest decision-making body of the Union next to Congress.
The PUL leadership is committed to working with the Permanent Committees to initiate and institutionalize policy reforms to strengthen the PUL.
In the coming days, the PUL leadership will announce the next set of appointments to affect the Standing Committee on Grievance and Ethics, which was transformed into the National Media Council; the Constitution Review Committee; the Special Project Committee for the Construction of PUL Headquarters; and other ad-hoc Committees as well as the leadership of the PUL subchapters in the Counties and Regions.
