Rev Reeves Warns Officials Against Nurturing Corruption

Africa-Press – Liberia. The President of the Liberia Council of Churches (LCC), Rev. Dr. Samuel Reeves, has cautioned public officials and opposition politicians against nurturing corruption, either through undue sycophancy or by undermining the Unity Party (UP)-led government of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai.

Rev. Reeves, who is also the Senior Pastor of the historic Providence Baptist Church on Ashmun and Broad Streets in Monrovia, delivered the message during Sunday service on November 2.

Speaking on the theme “In the Meantime” with reference to 1 Samuel 16:1-13, Rev. Reeves highlighted that, like David—who was anointed by Samuel but did not immediately become king—Liberia is in a season where patience, faithfulness, and integrity are required for progress.

“Liberia has been through a season of war and peace, recovery and renewal. God has something in store for this nation. But the question is: how will we live in the meantime? Be faithful when you are appointed or connected; God is in charge. It is God who gets you there,” he stated.

He warned that growing divisions among Liberians could delay the nation’s progress.

“If we continue to nurture corruption, we will remain in poverty. We are one of the richest countries in West Africa, but because of corruption, we are still poor. But God is saying today—if we plant faithfulness, unity, and integrity, Liberia will rise again,” he emphasized.

Negative Criticisms

Rev. Reeves noted that some presidential hopefuls are strategizing for the current government’s failure to advance their political ambitions.

“No amount of negative criticism or undue sycophancy will fix this country. Even if Jesus were here, they would still find fault. Some cannot see anything good, and some cannot see anything wrong,” he said.

He encouraged fairness, stating: “You don’t have to like this government; but when there is something good, acknowledge it; when there is something bad, point it out.”

‘Something Good for Liberia’

Despite opposition politicians’ lack of recognition for government achievements, Rev. Reeves reminded citizens that God has “something good for our nation.”

Rev. Reeves warned that growing divisions among Liberians could delay the nation’s progress.

“I don’t care how negative they are; God is in charge and knows what he is doing. Something good is coming for Liberia,” he said. He urged public officials to live responsibly and faithfully to benefit from Liberia’s progress.

No Presidential Materials

Rev. Reeves, who once ran as vice-presidential candidate with Dr. Mill Jones of the Movement for Economic Empowerment (MOVEE), also expressed concern over the surge in presidential aspirants.

“Too many people want to be President without being prepared. Before David was anointed, he was a shepherd; some want to be born today, Minister tomorrow, and President the next day. That is why we have problems—too many want the top seat but are not presidential material,” he said.

He stressed that such politicians exacerbate Liberia’s challenges because they refuse to be disciplined and prepared for God’s plan.

“Regardless of your position, perform your responsibilities excellently, obey, be humble, and wait for God’s timing. Liberians’ problems are big-shot problems; we must all be faithful to God and country so that corruption can perish,” Rev. Reeves concluded.
