Africa-Press – Liberia. In the early hours of Saturday, August 17, 2024, Roberts International Airport experienced an unexpected incident involving Royal Air Maroc flight AT-567. According to a release from the Liberia Airport Authority (LAA), the Boeing 737-800, which arrived safely at the airport around 5:15 AM, had taxied and docked at the Jetway without any visible issues. However, during a routine pre-departure inspection, airport officials discovered that the aircraft had collected significant debris, leading to concerns about potential runway damage.
Subsequent investigations by the LAA revealed that a portion of the runway’s pavement shoulders had been damaged, leaving large debris scattered across the runway. This prompted immediate action from the LAA, which grounded the aircraft and informed both the Liberia Civil Aviation Authority (LCAA) and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB).
Inspection teams from the LCAA and AAIB, along with the Minister of Transport, conducted a thorough review of the runway and the aircraft. It was confirmed that while the plane had landed safely, it had slightly veered off the runway. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the plane remained structurally intact.
Passengers, unaware of the incident, were safely deboarded and later accommodated in nearby hotels. They are awaiting a replacement flight from Royal Air Maroc scheduled to arrive later in the day.
The investigation into the cause of the incident is ongoing, and the aircraft will remain grounded until further notice. The LAA has assured the public that it is committed to upholding the highest safety standards for passengers and aircraft
