Africa-Press – Liberia. Former Montserrado County District #8 Representative, Rufus D. Neufville has called on members of the 54th Legislature to resist the temptation of allocating another batch of ‘undeserved US$30,000’ for each of them in the 2021 national budget.
In a communication to House Speaker Bhofal Chambers, Ambassador Neufville, in his capacity as the Executive Director of the People Action Network (PAN-Liberia), said the projected increment in the 2021 draft national budget has created a window of opportunity for the Legislature to institute upward adjustment in the salary of civil servants and also upgrade the University of Liberia.
To make that work, she suggested to the Speaker that the lawmakers should cut their allowances and that of top public officials and judges. On top of his suggestion, Amb. Neufville said in addition to canceling the US$3,000 allotment for each lawmaker (US$3,090,000), they should cut their allowances and benefits by 15 percent, and reduce the allowances and benefits of cabinet members by 15 percent as well. He also called for the reduction of the benefits and allowances of the Chief Justice and Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.
The former lawmaker, who also served as Chief of Protocol of the Republic of Liberia wants all foreign travel expenses reduce by 50 percent, with the exception of the President and the Minister of Foreign Affairs; and reduction of all entertainment lines in the budget by 50 percent. He also called for the amendment of section 204 subsection 1 (A&B) of the revenue code of 2000 and cut any allocation for procurement of new vehicle.
