Saving Lives Not Taking Lives

Africa-Press – Liberia. With the Global Community facing its greatest Crisis, the Crisis of the Taking of Lives by the actions of Human Beings, as seen in Climate Change, this Message from Pope Francis is at once most appropriate and timely: “Rivers do not drink their own water; trees do not eat their own fruit; the sun does not shine on itself and flowers do not spread their flagrance for themselves. Living for others is a rule of nature. We are all born to help each other. No matter how difficult it is…. Life is good when you are happy; but much better when others are happy because of you”.As the Climate Change Summit Conference of Partners 26 (COP26), is to be held in Scotland, the United Kingdom, from October 31 to November 12, 2021, the Pope’s Message should be spread clearly and widely to motivate Human Beings to Save Lives and Stop Taking Lives.

In 2015, the United Nations hosted the Paris Conference on Climate Change under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), held in Paris, France. The Conference brought together some 200 countries for the Conference of Partners 21 (COP21) at which the pathbreaking legally binding Paris Agreement was signed, committing the participants to reduce gas emissions to 1.5 degrees celsius by 2030. This commitment was made by the individual countries under the name Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The Paris Agreement also calls for the mobilization of USD100 bilion annually to assist the developing countries in their climate change efforts regarding the implementation of the Paris Agreement.

On the eve of the Climate Change Summit, COP26, let us review the progress that has been made in the implementation of the Paris Agreement. On October 12, 2020, the United Nations, the United Kingdom (UK) and France co-hosted the Climate Change Ambition Summit in partnership with Chile and Italy. This Summit brought together 75 world leaders, including 28 new leaders, thereby raising the number of the NDCs. On March 30, 2021, under the UK Presidency of COP26, countries and partners assembled on the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the sustainable development of the most vulnerable developing countries, in terms of climate change.

From April 22 to 23, 2021, a Leadership Summit on Climate Change brought together 40 world leaders through the hosting of President Joseph Biden of the United States of America (USA). While the USA and Japan made commitments at this Assembly to reduce their respective gas emissions t0 1.5 degrees celsius by 2030,all G7 countries ascended to the path for reducing gas emissions to net zero by 2050. The Petersberg Summit Climate Change Dialogue, held from May 6 to 7, 2021, was co-hosted by the UK COP26 Presidency and Germany, where some 40 world countries committed themselves to increase the pace of progress in the implementation of the Paris Agreement. At the P4G Summit on Climate Change held in Seoul, Korea, Heads of State, Private Sector CEOs and Civil Society leaders became united to foster public-private partnership for the implementation of the Paris Agreement. From May 31 to June 6, the 12th Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) Conference was held to take actions for clean energy globally. From May 31 to June 17, 2021, the United Nations Conference of Subsidiary Bodies was held to raise the commitment level of Participants and Observers of the Paris Conference with respect to the implementation of the Paris Agreement.

The G7 leaders met from June 11 to 13, 2021 to make stronger the unity needed among themselves needed to attain progress at the pending COP26. At the recently held World Bank and IMF Annual Meeting, focus was placed on stopping the corona pandemic and making progress on the implementation of the Paris Agreement. Currently, the United Nations Biodiversity Conference is being held in Kunming, China, dealing with the safety of the Planet Earth. Last week, the Global Investment Summit on building a greener future was held in the UK. Over this weekend, the Global Conference of Youth (COY16) will be held to find ways to push for more progress at the pending COP26. During this same weekend, October 30 to 31, the G20 will meet to work on making further progress at COP26.

Conferences are held and there is a lot of talking but problems continue because participants do no walk their talk. This is why it is most important to spread the Message of Pope Francis clearly and widely to motivate people to take non-violent actions to get people to save lives rather than to take lives.
