Africa-Press – Liberia. Seventeen young Liberian professionals have returned home after successfully completing the Mandela Washington Fellowship, a flagship U.S. Government program designed to build leadership and professional capacity among emerging African leaders.
The six-week fellowship, hosted at leading universities across the United States, provided participants with advanced training in Business and Entrepreneurship, Civic Leadership, and Public Management. Fellows engaged in academic coursework, mentorship, and networking opportunities with U.S. professionals across various sectors.
According to the U.S. Embassy in Monrovia, the program equips participants with practical tools to strengthen governance, improve public services, expand business initiatives, and drive community development efforts in their home countries.
Since its launch in 2014, the Mandela Washington Fellowship has brought nearly 6,500 young leaders from across Africa to the United States. The initiative continues to foster innovation, build networks, and support the next generation of changemakers on the continent.
Chargé d’Affaires Joseph Zadrozny congratulated the returning Liberian fellows and emphasized the significance of the program at a time when U.S.-Africa relations are increasingly focused on trade, investment, and sustainable development.
“The Fellowship underscores America’s enduring commitment to partnership with Africa,” Zadrozny said. “By opening U.S. classrooms, laboratories, and boardrooms to international talent, America demonstrates its capacity to inspire, educate, and lead—while strengthening connections that drive progress both at home and abroad.”
The Mandela Washington Fellowship is part of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), which supports youth engagement and leadership across the continent. The program continues to serve as a platform for cross-cultural collaboration and shared global advancement.
