Africa-Press – Liberia. The Chairperson of the National Aids Commission (NAC) Theodosia Kolee has revealed that the demography survey that was conducted in 2013 estimated that Liberia has 35 thousand people living with HIV virus.
According to the NAC Chairperson, 26 thousand Females are positive of the HIV virus, SIX Thousand males are positive of the HIV virus and three thousand children are positive of the virus.
Speaking on the state Radio Monday in Paynesville, Madam Kolee said most of the time it is the women who go to the hospital than the men indicating that most men visit the hospital when they are very sick.
She further disclosed that they have volunteer consoling and testing at the various health facilities noting that by the record of people who have done their HIV Test and with the comparing of the survey in 2013 has shown no difference.
Madam Kolee however reaffirmed that the country from the demography survey in 2013 and up tell now has proved that the country has 35 thousand people living with HIV. The NAC Boss narrated that the 35 thousand people who are living with the HIV virus are from across the country.
“Across the entire country and then we have three high beading counties but now other counties have been added, like the southeast, we know that Nimba is bordering other countries, so we have a lot of people, in Margibi, Grand Bassa and Montserrado, you know we are overpopulated so the numbers are high in those areas, so from three now we have up to nine counties that have a high infection in the country” she indicated.
She further disclosed that a survey is ongoing on the country’s HIV Status, stressing that as soon as the survey is completed and the report is ready they will share the report with the public.
Madam Kolee said stigma and discrimination have been the major issue in Liberia, stressing that the Commission is encouraging people through awareness to do away with stigma and discrimination.
She said the strategy of the National Aid Commission is to encourage more people to get tested and those who are positive can get on their medication.
According to her, there are key pharmacies and other facilities that are offering treatment. She further said the NAC is working with partners to address those issues relating to their activities among others.
