Africa-Press – Liberia. What the one-China principle is for and against? Internationally, i.e., there is but one China in the world. Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. The Government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. All forms of “Taiwan Independence” are resolutely opposed. The efforts of the Chinese government to achieve national reunification should be supported.
There is but one China in the world. Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. The Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. The one-China principle has been widely accepted as a prevailing consensus in the international community and a basic norm governing international relations. On October 1, 1949, the Central People’s Government of the PRC proclaimed, “this government is the sole legitimate government representing the entire people of the People’s Republic of China. It is ready to establish diplomatic relations with all foreign governments that are willing to abide by the principles of equality, mutual benefit and mutual respect for each other’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.” The principle governing New China’s establishment of diplomatic relations with a foreign country is that it recognizes the government of the PRC as the sole legitimate government representing the whole of China, severs or refrains from establishing diplomatic relations with the Taiwan authorities. Since then, the Chinese government’s solemn and reasonable stand for the one-China principle has gained the understanding and support of more and more countries and international organizations, and the one-China principle has been gradually accepted by the international community at large. In particular, in October 1971, the United Nations General Assembly adopted at its 26th session Resolution 2758, which expelled the representatives of the Taiwan authorities and restored the seat and all the lawful rights of the government of the PRC in the United Nations. Up to now, 183 countries, including Liberia, have established diplomatic relations with the PRC. They all acknowledge the one-China principle and promise to handle their relations with Taiwan within the one-China framework.
All forms of “Taiwan Independence” are resolutely opposed. Taiwan has been an integral part of China’s territory since ancient times. Moves to separate Taiwan from China represent the serious crime of secession, and undermine the common interests of compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait and the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation. They will lead nowhere. In 2008, in order to oppose and curb “Taiwan independence” secessionism, safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and maintain peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, China promulgated and implemented the Anti-Secession Law. The principle that “the state shall never allow the ‘Taiwan independence’ secessionist forces to make Taiwan secede from China under any name or by any means” has since been formally enshrined in law. No matter how the Taiwan authorities distort the one-China principle or interfere with cross-strait cooperation, their real goal is to push for “Taiwan independence,” which should obviously be opposed.
The efforts of the Chinese government to achieve national reunification should be supported. The important principles of respecting state sovereignty and territorial integrity as enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations are the cornerstones of modern international law and basic norms of international relations. No country or individual should adopt any kind of double standard. Respect for all countries’ sovereignty and territorial integrity should mean support for China’s complete reunification, and commitment to the one-China principle should mean opposition to any form of “Taiwan independence.” Based on this, Chinese government is entitled to take all measures necessary to settle the Taiwan question and achieve national reunification, free of external interference. Based on this, in recent years, several more countries have established or resumed diplomatic relations with China and severed so-called “diplomatic relations” with the Taiwan authorities. More than 100 countries and international organizations have been openly reaffirming their commitment to the one-China principle, firmly support for China’s reunification and oppose any external forces interfering in China’s internal affairs.
It is particularly worth mentioning that during the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in September last year, which President Joseph Nyuma Boakai attended, 53 African countries, including Liberia, and the African Union Commission issued the Beijing Declaration on Jointly Building an All-Weather China-Africa Community with a Shared Future for the New Era, clearly stating their firm support for all efforts by the Chinese government to achieve national reunification. This reflects the broad consensus among African countries on firmly supporting the Chinese government’s efforts to achieve national reunification.
Realizing China’s complete reunification is an inevitable trend, and it is what the greater national interests of China entail. China will realize reunification, and this is unstoppable.
