Africa-Press – Liberia. Kanneh’s primary concern is the lack of public disclosure of the project’s full cost, budget, design, and chosen contractor during the recent groundbreaking ceremony.
Veteran Liberian journalist and rights activist, Mr. Paul Kanneh is demanding transparency and accountability from Lofa County’s authorities over the pending construction of a proposed stadium in the county.
Kanneh, a citizen of the county, in an exclusive interview with this paper recently, raised serious questions regarding the transparency and accountability surrounding the proposed construction of the stadium in Vonima City.
Kanneh’s primary concern is the lack of public disclosure of the project’s full cost, budget, design, and chosen contractor during the recent groundbreaking ceremony.
The Liberian journalist and concerned citizen of Lofa is worried that without clear documentation showing how the project is locally funded, critics may falsely assume national funds are being improperly used.
He is demanding a full and clear disclosure from local sports authorities and as well as the county’s authorities so that their integrity is protected to prevent future criticism.
While commending the county for successfully hosting the recent District League, he maintains calls for clear financial details to be released before construction proceeds.
Kanneh, who is the Executive Director of the environmental media group, the Liberia Forest Media Watch or LFMW – producer of the Forest Hour, primary critique focuses on the recent groundbreaking ceremony, where authorities failed to provide a full disclosure of the project’s cost and the proposed stadium’s design, value and sources of funding.
According to him, clarity on the source of funding, whether local or national, along with the project’s full financial details and the identity of the contractor, is crucial for maintaining the credibility and integrity of Lofa County’s leaders.
‘I want to thank the people of Lofa for the successful hosting of the district league, which I think is the first of its kind. I hereby congratulate the winners for their splendid performance. At the same time, I want to call on sport authorities of the county and local county officials to make full disclosure of the cost and the design of the proposed sport stadium. I am making this call right now because yesterday they had an elaborate groundbreaking ceremony but without presenting the cost of the project,’ Paul told FPA.
Kanneh is also requesting the authorities to formally publish details of the contract and sources of funding in at least two local dailies for the benefit of the public.
“I also did not see the design. You know I watched the program all through and I was waiting to see if the design was posted somewhere that people could view but I’m told that it was not presented yesterday. I heard something around 65,000. They were not clear and I don’t want to think it was the stadium construction they were talking about, because that amount cannot build a stadium. Maybe that was for the district tournament,” he added.
